If you are attending as an individual\, your ticket at this level makes it possible for another who cannot afford a ticket to attend. It is only through the generosity of our community that we are able to support programs that enrich the lives of all Hoosiers. Thank you for your support! \nOther – “Pay What You Can” really does mean pay what you can. Indy Reads appreciates that every one of our community members is able to support our vision of 100% literacy for all in different ways. Whether you can pay $5 or $50\, we are so excited to see you – and thank you for your support! \n\n\n\nCat Cardwell\, Bookstore Program Director\, joined the team in 2021 with over 15 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. She is proud to have worked with important local organizations\, such as the Indiana Repertory Theatre and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis\, forming wonderful relationships with our community. Cat co-founded the nonprofit EclecticPond Theatre Company and became the Managing Director and Board President\, creating accessible and inspiring adaptations of classic works for the public and schools. She co-directed its first production\, Romeo & Juliet\, and directed a gender-reversed production of Julius Caesar. Cat graduated with honors from Indiana University\, majoring in English and Political Science\, before obtaining her Postgraduate Diploma with Merit in Shakespeare\, Stratford upon Avon and the Cultural History of Renaissance England from the Shakespeare Institute\, University of Birmingham\, UK. She returned to her Indiana home after working for Blackwell’s Bookshop\, the oldest bookstore in Oxford\, UK. Cat is thankful for a family that knew the importance of reading to her before the letters made any sense. \n \nPhoto: Cat excited to be a Frankenstein Reader for the 2017 Indiana Humanities’ One State/One Story kick-off with a 12-hour read-a-thon of the beloved book at the Indiana Medical History Museum. \n\n\n\nAlexandra Pearson runs the horror section in Blackwell’s Sci-fi & Manga bookshop in Oxford\, England. Blackwell’s was founded in 1879. She has Master’s degrees in both Death Studies and English Literature. Her love of horror stretches back to her childhood in haunted vicarages in London\, and will probably extend beyond the grave. \n\n\nHISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY \nHuman history has never been without monsters. Myths\, folktales\, epic stories have all had a monster or two\, even tales from ancient civilizations like the Aztecs or Incas. While appearances and characteristics might differ\, these monsters have appeared across cultures. Of these\, Frankenstein’s monster is one of the best-known of all time. \nIn 1816\, Mary Shelley\, wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley\, traveled to Geneva\, Switzerland\, to visit their friend\, poet Lord Byron\, at Villa Diodati. The group also consisted of physician John Polidori. A volcano erupted in Indonesia causing severe rain and climate abnormalities\, meaning the group was stuck inside the house where they read ghost stories to pass the time. Lord Byron subsequently proposed a competition to see who could come up with the best ghost story. Mary Shelley won this contest with “Frankenstein”; Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley did not finish their stories\, but Polidori wrote the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”\, “The Vampyre”. “Frankenstein” was anonymously published two years after when Mary was only 20 years old. The dedication in the very first edition was to William Godwin\, Mary Shelley’s father. Percy Shelley wrote the preface\, which is why many people assumed he wrote the book. Shelley republished it under her own name in 1823\, with a third edition coming eight years later that explained how the story came to be. This final version is what most readers are familiar with today. The story spawned editions upon editions of prints in every language\, and countless movie adaptations\, over almost two centuries. \nWhile Shelley always maintained she came up with the name of ‘Frankenstein’ (meaning ‘Stone of the Franks’) herself\, critics believe she was influenced by a castle with the same name. The castle’s previous inhabitant was one Konrad Dippel\, an unbalanced alchemist obsessed with creating an elixir that would help people live for over a hundred years. It was rumored that he dug up bodies and experimented on them\, just like Victor Frankenstein in Shelley’s book. \nRyan MacCloskey from Westfield\, New Jersey\, founded Frankenstein Friday in 1997 to celebrate the characters\, the book\, and the author. He chose Friday for the celebrations because of the fun alliteration it makes with Frankenstein. Plus\, he says\, it is easier to be festive on a Friday than any other day. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please email bookstore@indyreads.org. \nIndy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Local Author Mary Sexson
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Mary Sexson on October 28th at 2pm for a reading of her new poetry book ‘Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table’!\n\n\nJoin local author Mary Sexson on October 28th at 2pm for a reading and signing of her new poetry book Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table. \nThis reading is appropriate for adults and teens age 13+. \nThe reading will be followed by a signing. All proceeds of purchases made through Indy Reads support our English literacy programs. \n\n\n\nHer Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table \nHer Addiction An Empty Place at the Table is a collection of poems that came to be written in response to the family problem of addiction. I feel that the poems are a chronicle of the fear\, shame\, and anger we went through as a family\, during the years of our daughter’s active drug use and addiction. I wrote these poems over the course of almost 10 years\, as a way to cope with the pain of it\, the absolute fear of it\, which I processed and filtered through the lenses of these words. My husband and I were also taking care of our daughter’s young son during this time\, because she was unable to care for him. I knew we were not alone\, that the dark secret of addiction was present within many families. I wanted this book to be some sort of acknowledgement that yes\, this happened to us. Maybe it happened to you. So we need to talk about it openly\, to tell the truth about it\, to let go of the secrets and the shame. Writing these poems helped to free me from those feelings\, and ultimately helped to heal me from within. I want people to have a healing process reading these poems\, even just to know that they’re not alone. And I want to acknowledge that the incredible road to recovery my daughter has journeyed on is also a part of that healing. \n\n\n\nMary Sexson is author of the newly released Her Addiction An Empty Place at the Table (Finishing Line Press). Her other books include the award-winning 103 in the Light\, Selected Poems 1996-2000 (Restoration Press)\, and she is co-author of Company of Women\, New and Selected Poems (Chatter House Press). She also co-authored the upcoming book\, Marriage Maps and Driven Destinies\, to be published by Chatter House Press in the Fall of 2023. Sexson’s poetry has appeared in Tipton Poetry Journal\, Flying Island\, New Verse News\, The Indianapolis Review\, Anti-Heroin Chic\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, and Of Rust and Glass\, among others. Mary’s poetry has been a part of several public poetry projects\, including Shared Spaces/Shared Voices\, two Arts Kaleidoscope projects that collaborated with Gallery 308 in Muncie\, Indiana\, and two Spirit and Place projects with the Indiana Writers Center. Sexson’s work is part of the Inverse Poetry Archives for Hoosier Poets. One of her poems is in the Polaris Trilogy\, part of the Lunar Codex Project heading for the moon in 2024. Find her at masexson.wordpress.com\, and at Poetry Sisters on FaceBook. \n\n\n\nThis Event is Pay-What-You-Can \nHere’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Signing: Erik Lundorf
DESCRIPTION:Join Indy Reads for First Friday on November 3rd\, 6pm-8pm for a graphic novel signing by local artist\, Erik Lundorf on his book\, ‘Revealed!’\n\n\nJoin Indy Reads for First Friday on November 3rd\, 6pm-8pm for a graphic novel signing by local artist\, Erik Lundorf on his book\, ‘Revealed!’ \nFirst Friday \nIndy Reads gratefully accepts donations of used books during open hours on the First Friday of each month. Our community bookstore is open 11am-8pm today. Thank you for your gently used book donations! \n\n\n\nRevealed! by Erik Lundorf \nRevealed! is Erik’s debut graphic novel. It is a brush-inked\, hand lettered\, 84-page flashback amidst a 1990s gender reveal baby shower set in the American Midwest. \nRide the wave with Professor Ron Daltron through a 1970s high school flashback\, where a fresh-faced\, lonesome Ron yearns to do whatever it takes to make friends. Ron’s nostalgic spiraling is triggered while attending his long-lost cousin’s gender-reveal baby shower set in the 1990’s American Midwest. Both the excavation into Ron’s past\, along with the present-day buildup towards the creative yet questionable gender-reveal\, comingle in a quirky double helix amidst a crowd of oddball party goers. \n\n\n\nHello! I am an illustrator\, designer\, and cartoonist in Indianapolis\, IN. I graduated from DePauw University’s studio art program in ‘09 with a concentration in oil painting. Most of my twenties were spent experimenting in a variety of creative outlets\, from bluegrass circles to improv comedy groups\, all the while steadily growing my illustrative work. I have a great passion for making visual art with a narrative focus. In 2016 I became a contracted illustrator for the China-based English teaching school\, USA English\, producing monthly educational content with the same reoccurring animal cartoon characters. Additionally\, I take on a wide variety of one-off freelance work\, from designing murals for The Indy Arts Council and the Indiana Pacers\, to making startup company mascots and logo designs. \nWhen I am not focused on commissioned work\, I pour my time into telling stories in the comics medium. In the summer of 2023\, I released my debut graphic novel titled “Revealed!”\, a brush-inked\, hand lettered\, 84-page flashback amidst a 1990s gender reveal baby shower set in the American Midwest. \nCurrently\, I reside in Indianapolis with my wife and twin boys. We don’t have a pet\, but I am trying to convince my wife to let me get a kitty. SUMMARY:Author Reading: Kat Mustatea's Voidopolis
DESCRIPTION:Join Indy Reads in partnership with the IUPUI Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute for a talk and demo by Kat Mustatea on Nov. 9th.\n\n\nJoin Indy Reads in partnership with the IUPUI Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute for a talk and demo of Voidopolis by Kat Mustatea on November 9th at 5:30pm! \nVoidopolis is a first-of-its-kind augmented reality book from MIT Press Leonardo Series. This hybrid digital artistic and literary project in book form was made to disappear: the book can only be deciphered via an accompanying AR app\, and decays over time the way memory might\, leaving behind foggy imagery and half-remembered bits of language. \nThis event is recommended for teens and adults age 13+. \n\n\n\nKat Mustatea is transmedia playwright and artist working at the forefront of live performance and cutting edge technology. Her experiments with language and new narrative forms enlist absurdity\, hybridity\, and the computational uncanny to dig deeply into what it means to be human in the digital age. Her TED talk\, about AI as a form of puppetry\, offers a novel take to the meaning of generative art-making. Her work has been presented at a variety of venues including Ars Electronica Linz\, New Images Festival Paris\, Stanley Picker Gallery London\, New York Live Arts\, and The Cube at Virginia Tech\, among others. She is currently an artist member of ONX Studio (funded by Onassis Foundation) and has recently held residencies and fellowships at TED\, New Museum’s NEW INC incubator\, Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center\, the Orchard Project\, and New York University’s ITP/IMA Program. \n\n\n\nThis Event is Pay-What-You-Can \nHere’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. Indy Reads appreciates that every one of our community members is able to support our vision of 100% literacy for all in different ways. Whether you can pay $5 or $50\, we are so excited to see you – and thank you for your support! \n\n\n\nJenny Dalton grew up in Indianapolis and earned her B.A. in English Literature from Indiana University-Bloomington. She is a published poet and has worked as a journalist and a copywriter. She lives in Ukiah\, California. This is her first novel. \n\n\n\nOf Butterflies and Bullies \nMolly and her best friend Nicole are thrilled to be included in a gifted program for fifth graders\, but almost as soon as school starts in the fall\, Nicole makes new friends who pick on Molly and label her an outsider who doesn’t wear the right clothes or say the right things. This is a story about best friends\, girl bullies\, rich girls\, and girls from the other side of the tracks. It’s about friendships\, break-ups\, and the power of self-knowing. In the spirit of classic Judy Blume coming of age stories\, Of Butterflies & Bullies is a sincere story of a 10-year-old girl who learns to find her own strength to carry on during a tumultuous and unexpected experience at a new school. \n-– \n“Molly reminds us how to be brave and to keep going\, even when everything falls apart. This is an unflinching portrayal of the betrayals of middle school\, the awkward ache of it\, and a girl discovering her resilience. Of Butterflies and Bullies shakes something loose inside so we too remember how to heal.” – Melissa Eletherion-Carr\, Branch Librarian \n“As I read this book\, I was brought back to my feelings and memories of being bullied at that age. Molly’s experiences are authentic and it’s painful to read at times. As she’d go into bad bullying situations\, I’d find myself shouting\, ‘No\, Molly!’ This is a beautifully written story that will stay with me and will touch many.” Jennifer Cockerill\, Librarian \n“Dalton’s poignant book achingly recreates pre-adolescence\, when we are challenged to create our own lifelines\, and to find new\, solid ground on which we can moor our changing identity. In facing this challenge\, Molly reminds us that we all have strong\, internal navigation systems\, and adolescence is the time that we begin to learn how to listen to them.” — Laura Martocci\, PhD.\, author of Bullying: The Social Destruction of Self and My Bullied Past: Why Does it Still HURT? \n“For bright and wholesome Indianapolis fifth-grader Molly Greely\, a change of schools brings sudden and unexpected friendship challenges. As she transitions out of her comfortable neighborhood elementary school to one that serves academically gifted students on the cusp of middle school\, she’s left feeling socioeconomically disadvantaged relative to her peers\, who all wear the latest fashions and go on the most amazing family vacations. Even Molly’s longtime best friend\, Nicole\, begins to gravitate away from Molly and toward the girls in their class who gain popularity with designer jeans and the casual cruelty so often used to bolster social status by excluding others. Set in the 1980s\, Of Butterflies and Bullies will also resonate with moms who grew up in that era. Familiar pop culture references abound. A captivating debut YA novel by Jenny Dalton\, and a great pick for mother-daughter book clubs. — Lori Day\, author of Her Next Chapter: How Mother-Daughter Book Clubs Can Help Girls Navigate Malicious Media\, Risky Relationships\, Girl Gossip\, and So Much More \n“An important topic and conversation starter about how we can support girls being bullied and help them overcome and rise above. I would recommend this book! So great to read.” — Andi Long\, Founder\, Bloom Foundation \n“… beautifully captures the complex\, changing lives of preteen girls in this painful but ultimately triumphant novel of friendship and betrayal.” — Barbara Shoup\, author of eight novels for adults and young adults and Writer-in-Residence\, Indiana Writers Center \n\n\n\nBarbara Shoup is the author of eight novels for adults and young adults\, most recently An American Tune\, and Looking for Jack Kerouac\, and a memoir\, A Commotion in Your Heart. She \nis the the co-author of Novel Ideas: Contemporary Authors Share the Creative Process and Story Matters. Her short fiction\, poetry\, essays and interviews have appeared in numerous small magazines\, as well as in The Writer and The New York Times travel section. \n \nShoup is the recipient of numerous grants from the Indiana Art Commission\, two creative renewal grants from the Arts Council of Indianapolis\, the 2006 PEN Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Working Writer Fellowship and the 2012 Eugene and Marilyn Glick Regional Indiana Author Award. Her young adult novels\, Wish You Were Here and Stranded in Harmony were selected as American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults. Vermeer’s Daughter was a School Library Journal Best Adult Book for Young Adults. \n \nBarbara Shoup graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in secondary education. She taught creative writing to high school students for more than twenty years. Currently\, she is the Writer-in-Residence at the Indiana Writers Center and a creative writing faculty member of Art Workshop International in Assisi. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please email bookstore@indyreads.org. \n \nIndy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. This conqueror will rise and change the tides\, no matter the consequences. \nAfter a botched marriage proposal and a rejection from her dream job\, actress Luz Narváez García is left with a deep desire to disappear from the public eye. Between a lethal power hungry naval officer\, riddled with deep desires of revenge\, and a mysterious bloodthirsty pirate who steals her indispensable necklace and kidnaps her\, she’s thrust into a dangerous role in the treacherous politics of piracy. \nCaught up in a web of danger and intrigue\, Luz must use her wits and cunning to not only ensure her survival but to also outsmart those who seek a higher power only she is meant to wield… all while finding a way back home that doesn’t alter the course of history catastrophically. \n\n\n\nNicole Velazquez is a Puerto Rican fantasy\, sci-fi\, and dystopian author. She earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University\, with concentrations on science and cultural education. She has a passion for Caribbean history\, all things fantasy\, and bringing awareness about matters that affect Puerto Rican and Latine communities. SUMMARY:Workshop: Hands-on Community Art
DESCRIPTION:Join Arthrive at Indy Reads on November 18th\, 12pm-6pm\, for a hands-on community art workshop! This all-ages event will cover printmaking!\n\n\nJoin Arthrive at Indy Reads on November 18th\, 12pm-6pm\, for a hands-on community art workshop! This all-ages event will cover printmaking! \nTry out Arthrive’s new community art kit which breaks down into a portable tabletop printmaking studio! The print is collaborative and takes two people to make a print. The unique rainbow-rolled prints are distributed at the studio event and into the community in public spaces. These prints belong to a public art archive and people are encouraged to return the prints back to the public space. \n\n\n\nErin Harper Vernon is the founder of Arthrive\, an artist\, and an educator. Volunteerism is central to her art practice in social impact\, justice\, and community-centered art. After teaching in higher education for 18+ years\, after 2020\, she shifted her teaching practice to where she hoped to make more of a felt impact in her immediate neighborhood. As a multidisciplinary artist\, she pulls from design\, photography\, printmaking\, and film skills. She is interested in connecting people through collaboration. \nPractices that incorporate post-traumatic growth through art-making inspire her art practice. As a teacher\, she asks herself\, “How can I push into my neighborhood or city?” Living with art is a human essential that impacts the social health of a community or quality of life. As an artist\, she is interested in how making art can help people have empathy and cultural connection. \nIn approaching art as a social practice\, she asks herself what strengths or skills she can volunteer to the community—at the same time\, helping to bridge a felt need to connect to others through the process of art-making and shared community. \n \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can.
