You will often find her making little weird sketches\, curled up with some embroidery\, or surrounded by her husband\, three children\, and crazy dog. \n\n\n\nAbout This Book \nBING BANG PLING \nTwist the ratchet. CLACK\, CLICK\, CLACK. Now a hammer. Just one THWACK! Celebrating the pride in a job well done\, BING\, BANG\, PLING is a charming ode to backyard fun. SUMMARY:An Evening with Katie Barnes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with award-winning journalist Katie Barnes on September 18 at VisionLoft Stutz to celebrate the release of Fair Play.\n\n\nIndy Reads and the Indiana Youth Group are excited to host an evening with award-winning journalist Katie Barnes on September 18 at VisionLoft Stutz to celebrate Fair Play: a richly reported and provocative look at the history of women’s sports and the controversy surrounding trans athletes by a leading LGBTQ+ sports journalist. Katie will be in discussion with Ali Brown\, a nonprofit executive and City-County Councillor for Indianapolis’ Fifth District. \nThanks to GANGGANG\, all tickets are free\, but you must reserve your seat. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. Discussion begins at 7:00pm. \nWhen placing your reservations\, please select the number of tickets. You may add on a donation\, which will be shared with Indy Reads and Indiana Youth Group. Each book reservation includes tax and service fee. \n\n\n\nFor decades women have been playing competitive sports thanks in large part to the protective cover of Title IX. Since passage of that law\, the number of women participating in sports and the level of competition in high school\, college\, and professionally\, has risen dramatically. In Fair Play\, award-winning journalist Katie Barnes traces the evolution of women’s sports as a pastime and a political arena\, where equality and fairness have been fought over for generations. As attitudes toward gender have shifted to embrace more fluidity in recent decades\, sex continues to be viewed as a static binary that is easily determined: male or female. It is on that very idea of static sex that we have built an entire sporting apparatus. Now that foundation is crumbling as a result of intense culture wars. Whether we are talking aboutbathrooms\, gender affirming care for trans youth\, or sports\, the debate about who gets to decide gender is being litigated every day in every community. Many transgender and intersex athletes\, from a South African runner\, to a wrestler in Texas\, to Connecticut track stars\, to a swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania\, have captured the attention of law and policy makers who want to decide how and when they compete. \nWomen’s sports\, since their inception\, have been seen as a separate class of competition that requires protection and rules for entry. But what are those rules and who gets to make them? Fair Play looks at all sides of the issue and presents a reasoned and much-needed solution that seeks to preserve opportunities for all going forward. \n“I am beyond excited that Katie Barnes wrote this book\, because I know I’m not alone when I say I often find myself increasingly confused and agitated by the debates swirling around trans athletes and women’s sports. Katie is uniquely qualified to write this book\, as they have covered trans athletes extensively for ESPN & identify as non-binary. This book will help you better understand this very important topic of our time. It really is a must read given how divisive this issue has become.” \n—Julie Foudy\, two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist\, and current ESPN broadcaster \n\n\n\nKATIE BARNES (they/them) is an award-winning journalist covering the intersection of sports and gender for ESPN. Barnes is a three-time GLAAD Award nominee\, a nominee for the prestigious Dan Jenkins Medal\, and they were named the 2017 Journalist of the Year by NLGJA – The Association of LGBTQ Journalists. They were an executive producer on “Mack Wrestles\,” an ESPN 30 for 30 short documentary that premiered at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival and was shortlisted for awards by Critic’s Choice\, NY DOCS and the International Documentary Association. This is their first book. \n\n\n\nALI BROWN is a nonprofit executive and City-County Councillor for Indianapolis’ Fifth District. From her activist work with organizations like Freedom Indiana to her efforts connecting people with new careers as a workforce development nonprofit executive\, Ali has dedicated her life to empowering people and lifting up her community. She is currently the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Propylaeum Historic Foundation\, one of Indiana’s oldest women’s organizations that is focused on leadership\, arts & culture\, and historic preservation. \nAli has been married to her husband\, Zach\, for more than seven years and their son\, Dylan\, attends elementary school in Lawrence Township Schools. Ali is a Ball State graduate and was a 4 year varsity letterer on the Division 1 Ball State Women’s Track and Field Team. \n\n\n\nCreating spaces for LGBTQ+ young people since 1987. \nIndiana Youth Group (IYG) serves young people ages 12-24 who self-identify as LGBTQ+\, as well as their ally peers. All programs and services are offered free of charge. \nIYG strives to provide safer spaces to build self-confidence\, explore individualism\, and develop friendships within the LGBTQ+ community. \nWe also advocate for LGBTQ+ youth in schools\, the community\, and through family support services. \n\n\n\nGANGGANG activates the creative economy to center beauty and culture in cities. We believe that culture brings humanity together and that art challenges mindsets. It is our vision to build new ecosystems that center the care and economic viability of creatives. We do that via programming\, advocacy and production. Thank you for considering a collaboration with GANGGANG to make all spaces more vibrant and equitable by way of the creative economy. \n\n\n\nIndy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. Our mission is to build the literacy\, English language\, and job readiness skills to empower adults and families to reach their full potential. SUMMARY:Play Reading: Popular Monsters by Lou Harry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading of Popular Monsters by Lou Harry on October 6th at 7pm! Don’t miss this Halloween-themed play by a local playwright.\n\n\nAmerican Lives Theatre and Indy Reads present a special one-night-only reading of “Popular Monsters” by playwright Lou Harry. It’s 1978\, “Halloween” is about to open in theaters\, and Greg has landed his dream job at his favorite horror movie magazine. But what’s really scary isn’t what’s on screen or in print. The editor of Quill\, the magazine of the Society of Professional Journalists\, he has written more than 30 published books and writes frequently for Indianapolis Monthly\, Midwest Film Journal and other publications. Follow him @LouHarry and via www.louharry.com // American Lives Mission: Our Mission \n\n\n\nAmerican Lives Theatre engages\, provokes and entertains by presenting a mirror to this country\, reflecting the lives and history of all Americans with new work and neglected classics. Whether you can pay $5 or $50\, we are so excited to see you – and thank you for your support! \n\n\n\nKim DeRose writes dark\, magical stories about strong\, magical girls. She grew up in Santa Barbara\, California\, where she spent childhood summers reading books and writing stories (which she was convinced her local bookstore would publish). She now lives in New York City\, where she spends all seasons reading books and writing stories. She earned her MFA in film directing from UCLA\, and currently works in digital media. When she’s not reading or writing she can be found listening to podcasts on long walks\, drinking endless cups of coffee\, and spending time with her family. For Girls Who Walk Through Fire is her debut novel. You can find her on Instagram @kimderosewrites or at her website www.kimderose.com. \n\n\n\nFor Girls Who Walk Through Fire \nThose who would suppress and destroy you stand not a chance when confronted with the power that lies within these pages . . . \n \nElliott D’Angelo-Brandt is sick and tired of putting up with it all. Every week\, she attends a support group for teen victims of sexual assault\, but all they do is talk. Elliott’s done with talking. What she wants is justice. \n \nAnd she has a plan for getting it: a spell book that she found in her late mom’s belongings that actually works. Elliott recruits a coven of fellow survivors from the group. She\, Madeline\, Chloe\, and Bea don’t have much in common\, but they are united in their rage at a system that heaps judgments on victims and never seems to punish those who deserve it. \n \nAs they each take a turn casting a hex against their unrepentant assailants\, the girls find themselves leaning on each other in ways they never expected—and realizing that revenge has heavy implications. Each member of the coven will have to make a choice: continue down the path of magical vigilantism or discover what it truly means to claim their power. \n \nFor Girls Who Walk Through Fire is a fierce\, deeply moving novel about perseverance in the face of injustice and the transformational power of friendship. \n-- \n“DeRose unflinchingly examines the impact of sexual assault on teens and the various paths there are toward healing. Each having experienced different types of assault\, the girls relive their personal histories via shifting perspectives\, providing nuance and complexity. Their healing journeys are both hopeful and realistic\, as DeRose presents a cleareyed assessment of the subject\, including society’s dismissal of victims’ stories and the difficult path to judicial justice. Their growing friendships are compelling and well depicted . . . . A searing examination of sexual assault centering teen witches who fight back.” —Kirkus Reviews \n \n“A bold and compassionate debut.”—Booklist \n \n“Kim DeRose has written a book at once about revenge and identity and friendship and trauma and empowerment and WITCHCRAFT and all the richness of navigating your way through the muck of it all. It’s easy to fall in love with Elliott and her 90’s song references and throwback style as she leads the charge of teenage witches with rage and heart. DeRose’s writing has teeth and all the gooey inner stuff. I sunk into this world and kept turning the pages in solidarity with their mission and with hope they would eventually find what they needed to start the healing journey. A testimony to the power of the storytelling by Kim DeRose.” —Bonnie Pipkin\, author of Aftercare Instructions \n \n“Fierce\, electric\, and ultimately empowering\, For Girls Who Walk Through Fire is a brave and bold piece of fiction about the discovery of one’s true power\, the journey toward healing\, and the magical bonds of friendship. For victims who suffer in silence\, this novel screams.”—Laurie Faria Stolarz\, author of Jane\, Anonymous \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please email bookstore@indyreads.org. \n \nIndy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. She is proud to have worked with important local organizations\, such as the Indiana Repertory Theatre and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis\, forming wonderful relationships with our community. Cat co-founded the nonprofit EclecticPond Theatre Company and became the Managing Director and Board President\, creating accessible and inspiring adaptations of classic works for the public and schools. She co-directed its first production\, Romeo & Juliet\, and directed a gender-reversed production of Julius Caesar. Cat graduated with honors from Indiana University\, majoring in English and Political Science\, before obtaining her Postgraduate Diploma with Merit in Shakespeare\, Stratford upon Avon and the Cultural History of Renaissance England from the Shakespeare Institute\, University of Birmingham\, UK. She returned to her Indiana home after working for Blackwell’s Bookshop\, the oldest bookstore in Oxford\, UK. Cat is thankful for a family that knew the importance of reading to her before the letters made any sense. \n \nPhoto: Cat excited to be a Frankenstein Reader for the 2017 Indiana Humanities’ One State/One Story kick-off with a 12-hour read-a-thon of the beloved book at the Indiana Medical History Museum. \n\n\n\nAlexandra Pearson runs the horror section in Blackwell’s Sci-fi & Manga bookshop in Oxford\, England. Blackwell’s was founded in 1879. She has Master’s degrees in both Death Studies and English Literature. Her love of horror stretches back to her childhood in haunted vicarages in London\, and will probably extend beyond the grave. \n\n\nHISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY \nHuman history has never been without monsters. Myths\, folktales\, epic stories have all had a monster or two\, even tales from ancient civilizations like the Aztecs or Incas. While appearances and characteristics might differ\, these monsters have appeared across cultures. Of these\, Frankenstein’s monster is one of the best-known of all time. \nIn 1816\, Mary Shelley\, wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley\, traveled to Geneva\, Switzerland\, to visit their friend\, poet Lord Byron\, at Villa Diodati. The group also consisted of physician John Polidori. A volcano erupted in Indonesia causing severe rain and climate abnormalities\, meaning the group was stuck inside the house where they read ghost stories to pass the time. Lord Byron subsequently proposed a competition to see who could come up with the best ghost story. Mary Shelley won this contest with “Frankenstein”; Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley did not finish their stories\, but Polidori wrote the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”\, “The Vampyre”. “Frankenstein” was anonymously published two years after when Mary was only 20 years old. The dedication in the very first edition was to William Godwin\, Mary Shelley’s father. Percy Shelley wrote the preface\, which is why many people assumed he wrote the book. Shelley republished it under her own name in 1823\, with a third edition coming eight years later that explained how the story came to be. This final version is what most readers are familiar with today. The story spawned editions upon editions of prints in every language\, and countless movie adaptations\, over almost two centuries. \nWhile Shelley always maintained she came up with the name of ‘Frankenstein’ (meaning ‘Stone of the Franks’) herself\, critics believe she was influenced by a castle with the same name. The castle’s previous inhabitant was one Konrad Dippel\, an unbalanced alchemist obsessed with creating an elixir that would help people live for over a hundred years. It was rumored that he dug up bodies and experimented on them\, just like Victor Frankenstein in Shelley’s book. \nRyan MacCloskey from Westfield\, New Jersey\, founded Frankenstein Friday in 1997 to celebrate the characters\, the book\, and the author. He chose Friday for the celebrations because of the fun alliteration it makes with Frankenstein. Plus\, he says\, it is easier to be festive on a Friday than any other day. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please email bookstore@indyreads.org. \nIndy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Local Author Mary Sexson
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Mary Sexson on October 28th at 2pm for a reading of her new poetry book ‘Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table’!\n\n\nJoin local author Mary Sexson on October 28th at 2pm for a reading and signing of her new poetry book Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table. \nThis reading is appropriate for adults and teens age 13+. \nThe reading will be followed by a signing. All proceeds of purchases made through Indy Reads support our English literacy programs. \n\n\n\nHer Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table \nHer Addiction An Empty Place at the Table is a collection of poems that came to be written in response to the family problem of addiction. I feel that the poems are a chronicle of the fear\, shame\, and anger we went through as a family\, during the years of our daughter’s active drug use and addiction. I wrote these poems over the course of almost 10 years\, as a way to cope with the pain of it\, the absolute fear of it\, which I processed and filtered through the lenses of these words. My husband and I were also taking care of our daughter’s young son during this time\, because she was unable to care for him. I knew we were not alone\, that the dark secret of addiction was present within many families. I wanted this book to be some sort of acknowledgement that yes\, this happened to us. Maybe it happened to you. So we need to talk about it openly\, to tell the truth about it\, to let go of the secrets and the shame. Writing these poems helped to free me from those feelings\, and ultimately helped to heal me from within. I want people to have a healing process reading these poems\, even just to know that they’re not alone. And I want to acknowledge that the incredible road to recovery my daughter has journeyed on is also a part of that healing. \n\n\n\nMary Sexson is author of the newly released Her Addiction An Empty Place at the Table (Finishing Line Press). Her other books include the award-winning 103 in the Light\, Selected Poems 1996-2000 (Restoration Press)\, and she is co-author of Company of Women\, New and Selected Poems (Chatter House Press). She also co-authored the upcoming book\, Marriage Maps and Driven Destinies\, to be published by Chatter House Press in the Fall of 2023. Sexson’s poetry has appeared in Tipton Poetry Journal\, Flying Island\, New Verse News\, The Indianapolis Review\, Anti-Heroin Chic\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, and Of Rust and Glass\, among others. Mary’s poetry has been a part of several public poetry projects\, including Shared Spaces/Shared Voices\, two Arts Kaleidoscope projects that collaborated with Gallery 308 in Muncie\, Indiana\, and two Spirit and Place projects with the Indiana Writers Center. Sexson’s work is part of the Inverse Poetry Archives for Hoosier Poets. One of her poems is in the Polaris Trilogy\, part of the Lunar Codex Project heading for the moon in 2024. Find her at masexson.wordpress.com\, and at Poetry Sisters on FaceBook. \n\n\n\nThis Event is Pay-What-You-Can \nHere’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Graphic Novel Signing: Erik Lundorf
DESCRIPTION:Join Indy Reads for First Friday on November 3rd\, 6pm-8pm for a graphic novel signing by local artist\, Erik Lundorf on his book\, ‘Revealed!’\n\n\nJoin Indy Reads for First Friday on November 3rd\, 6pm-8pm for a graphic novel signing by local artist\, Erik Lundorf on his book\, ‘Revealed!’ \nFirst Friday \nIndy Reads gratefully accepts donations of used books during open hours on the First Friday of each month. Our community bookstore is open 11am-8pm today. Thank you for your gently used book donations! \n\n\n\nRevealed! by Erik Lundorf \nRevealed! is Erik’s debut graphic novel. It is a brush-inked\, hand lettered\, 84-page flashback amidst a 1990s gender reveal baby shower set in the American Midwest. \nRide the wave with Professor Ron Daltron through a 1970s high school flashback\, where a fresh-faced\, lonesome Ron yearns to do whatever it takes to make friends. Ron’s nostalgic spiraling is triggered while attending his long-lost cousin’s gender-reveal baby shower set in the 1990’s American Midwest. Both the excavation into Ron’s past\, along with the present-day buildup towards the creative yet questionable gender-reveal\, comingle in a quirky double helix amidst a crowd of oddball party goers. \n\n\n\nHello! I am an illustrator\, designer\, and cartoonist in Indianapolis\, IN. I graduated from DePauw University’s studio art program in ‘09 with a concentration in oil painting. Most of my twenties were spent experimenting in a variety of creative outlets\, from bluegrass circles to improv comedy groups\, all the while steadily growing my illustrative work. I have a great passion for making visual art with a narrative focus. In 2016 I became a contracted illustrator for the China-based English teaching school\, USA English\, producing monthly educational content with the same reoccurring animal cartoon characters. Additionally\, I take on a wide variety of one-off freelance work\, from designing murals for The Indy Arts Council and the Indiana Pacers\, to making startup company mascots and logo designs. \nWhen I am not focused on commissioned work\, I pour my time into telling stories in the comics medium. In the summer of 2023\, I released my debut graphic novel titled “Revealed!”\, a brush-inked\, hand lettered\, 84-page flashback amidst a 1990s gender reveal baby shower set in the American Midwest. \nCurrently\, I reside in Indianapolis with my wife and twin boys. We don’t have a pet\, but I am trying to convince my wife to let me get a kitty.
