As a musician it is always a joy to accompany his words\, and just as much of a pleasure to sit quitely with any of his collections and memories and join him in all the travels and places in the heart he takes us to. His poetry reflects his great love of the blues.” – David Amram\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and author \n“Whether teaching his German students to listen to Whitman’s poetry until they hear his ‘sweet\, delicious\, rocking whisper\,’ or recording the ‘no-longer-alive radiance’ of the stars shining their blessing onto the home his parents built in Jasper\, Indiana\, Homecomings is the record of a poet\, teacher\, and critic meditating with deep love and profound insight into the writers\, the places\, and the questions that have shaped his work. Essential reading for anyone familiar with Krapf’s poetry\, it is also a book for those interested in how a poem works and how an artist chooses and maintains a life-long passion for craft and for the truth that art reveals.” – Susan Neville\, author\, The Town of Whispering Dolls: Stories \n\n\n\nNorbert Krapf\, Indiana poet laureate from 2008 to 2010\, was born in 1943 in Jasper\, Indiana\, a German-Catholic town in southern Indiana. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Local Author Mary Sexson
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Mary Sexson on December 10th at 2pm for a reading of her new poetry book ‘Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table’!\n\n\nJoin local author Mary Sexson on December 10th at 2pm for a reading and signing of her new poetry book Her Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table. \nThis reading is appropriate for adults and teens age 13+. \nThe reading will be followed by a signing. All proceeds of purchases made through Indy Reads support our English literacy programs. \n\n\n\nHer Addiction: An Empty Place at the Table \nHer Addiction An Empty Place at the Table is a collection of poems that came to be written in response to the family problem of addiction. I feel that the poems are a chronicle of the fear\, shame\, and anger we went through as a family\, during the years of our daughter’s active drug use and addiction. I wrote these poems over the course of almost 10 years\, as a way to cope with the pain of it\, the absolute fear of it\, which I processed and filtered through the lenses of these words. My husband and I were also taking care of our daughter’s young son during this time\, because she was unable to care for him. I knew we were not alone\, that the dark secret of addiction was present within many families. I wanted this book to be some sort of acknowledgement that yes\, this happened to us. Maybe it happened to you. So we need to talk about it openly\, to tell the truth about it\, to let go of the secrets and the shame. Writing these poems helped to free me from those feelings\, and ultimately helped to heal me from within. I want people to have a healing process reading these poems\, even just to know that they’re not alone. And I want to acknowledge that the incredible road to recovery my daughter has journeyed on is also a part of that healing. \n\n\n\nMary Sexson is author of the newly released Her Addiction An Empty Place at the Table (Finishing Line Press). Her other books include the award-winning 103 in the Light\, Selected Poems 1996-2000 (Restoration Press)\, and she is co-author of Company of Women\, New and Selected Poems (Chatter House Press). She also co-authored the upcoming book\, Marriage Maps and Driven Destinies\, to be published by Chatter House Press in the Fall of 2023. Sexson’s poetry has appeared in Tipton Poetry Journal\, Flying Island\, New Verse News\, The Indianapolis Review\, Anti-Heroin Chic\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, and Of Rust and Glass\, among others. Mary’s poetry has been a part of several public poetry projects\, including Shared Spaces/Shared Voices\, two Arts Kaleidoscope projects that collaborated with Gallery 308 in Muncie\, Indiana\, and two Spirit and Place projects with the Indiana Writers Center. Sexson’s work is part of the Inverse Poetry Archives for Hoosier Poets. One of her poems is in the Polaris Trilogy\, part of the Lunar Codex Project heading for the moon in 2024. Find her at masexson.wordpress.com\, and at Poetry Sisters on FaceBook. \n\n\n\nThis Event is Pay-What-You-Can \nHere’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Workshop: Hands-on Community Art
DESCRIPTION:Join Arthrive at Indy Reads on January 13th\, 2pm-6pm\, for a hands-on community art workshop! This all-ages event will cover printmaking!\n\n\nJoin Arthrive at Indy Reads on January 13th\, 2pm-6pm\, for a hands-on community art workshop! This all-ages event will cover printmaking! \nTry out Arthrive’s new community art kit which breaks down into a portable tabletop printmaking studio! The print is collaborative and takes two people to make a print. The unique rainbow-rolled prints are distributed at the studio event and into the community in public spaces. These prints belong to a public art archive and people are encouraged to return the prints back to the public space. \n\n\n\nErin Harper Vernon is the founder of Arthrive\, an artist\, and an educator. Volunteerism is central to her art practice in social impact\, justice\, and community-centered art. After teaching in higher education for 18+ years\, after 2020\, she shifted her teaching practice to where she hoped to make more of a felt impact in her immediate neighborhood. As a multidisciplinary artist\, she pulls from design\, photography\, printmaking\, and film skills. She is interested in connecting people through collaboration. \nPractices that incorporate post-traumatic growth through art-making inspire her art practice. As a teacher\, she asks herself\, “How can I push into my neighborhood or city?” Living with art is a human essential that impacts the social health of a community or quality of life. As an artist\, she is interested in how making art can help people have empathy and cultural connection. \nIn approaching art as a social practice\, she asks herself what strengths or skills she can volunteer to the community—at the same time\, helping to bridge a felt need to connect to others through the process of art-making and shared community. \n \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. Indy Reads values our community and facilitators. We are proud to provide programming to all. Thank you for being a part of our community! \n$10 – This donation covers the cost of one attendee to this event. Indy Reads strives to bring the very best programming to Fountain Square and all Hoosiers. Thank you for helping us to keep our quality programs accessible for all! \n$20 – This donation covers the cost of two attendees to this event. If you are attending as an individual\, your ticket at this level makes it possible for another who cannot afford a ticket to attend. It is only through the generosity of our community that we are able to support programs that enrich the lives of all Hoosiers. Thank you for your support! \nOther – “Pay-What-You-Can” really does mean pay what you can. Whether you can pay $5 or $50\, we are so excited to see you – and thank you for your support!

SUMMARY:Author Reading: All Up In Your Bizness with Julianna Newland
DESCRIPTION:Join Indy Reads and Julianna Newland on February 10th at 2pm for a reading and signing of her book\, All Up in Your Bizness!\n\n\n16thJoin Indy Reads and Julianna Newland on February 10th at 2pm for a reading and signing of her book\, All Up in Your Bizness: Managing the Business Crap! \nThis event is recommended for ages 16+. \nAll proceeds from purchases made through Indy Reads support our adult literacy programming. \n\n\n\nJulianna Newland grew up and has resided in Indianapolis for most of her life. She was educated first by many nuns and then received her bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Political Science from the University of Indianapolis. She then worked for more than thirty years at a Fortune 500 company\, Indiana state government\, two non-profits\, and a trade association. \nJulianna has been a writer her entire adult life\, beginning as the editor-in-chief of her university newspaper. Her career landed her jobs in need of a solid writer who also provides challenging skills in public affairs such as government relations\, lobbying\, and political fundraising. She served on numerous state and local boards and commissions appointed by former governors or the former Indianapolis mayor. Recently\, she started a small communications business. \nTo sharpen her witty acumen\, she married award-winning journalist James Newland\, Jr.\, who was a steady source of seedy stories\, and they have been married for 40 years. She lives in Indianapolis with her husband and adult son. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \nDoes work get you down? Worried about the upcoming performance review? Too many gossipers in the office? Can’t figure out who keeps sending you flirty emails? All Up in Your Bizness: Managing the Business Crap takes a witty look at the interplay of men and women employees in the workplace while they deal with these problems and many more. While largely written tongue-in-cheek\, the book does provide sage advice in dealing with these business challenges\, And\, after a hard day at the office\, who wouldn’t love to make an original craft cocktail based on the delish recipes in this book? \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can!
