SUMMARY:Book-to-Film Club with Kan-Kan Cinema: Jurassic Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 21st at 4pm for a book discussion following a film screening of Jurassic Park at Kan-Kan Cinema & Brasserie! \n\n\n\nPlease purchase tickets to Kan-Kan Cinema & Brasserie’s film screening here. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a free book club and discussion after the film led by Molly Sweets. There will also be a costume contest with a prize package from Indy Reads and Kan-Kan. \n\n\n\nMolly Sweets is a life-long dinosaur enthusiast. She had childhood dreams of being a paleontologist but with her severe asthma\, she was forced to abandon Brontosaurs for bronchospasms. \n\n\n\nA graduate of Indiana University at Indianapolis\, she has an English degree with a Concentration in Film Studies and Theory and a minor in Literature so it’s unsurprising that her love of dinosaurs extends to Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. Over the years\, she has worn out three trade paperbacks of the novel and her original VHS copy of the film (replaced with a DVD copy\, the first DVD she purchased). The dinosaur devotion doesn’t stop there. Molly is a fervent gamer and has over a dozen dinosaur-themed games\, as well as having spent (number redacted) hours playing Jurassic World Evolution and its sequel. \n\n\n\nAside from prehistory\, Molly has a passion for reading\, gaming\, medieval calligraphy and illumination\, and crochet. \n\n\n\nYou must buy tickets for this event. If you would like to include a donation to Indy Reads as part\, please use the “Donate” button. Indy Reads is a 501c3 nonprofit. Our mission is to empower adults and their families through literacy\, English language skills\, and job readiness programming. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For April\, we’re reading Educated by Tara Westover! \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Indy Reads\, as usual. To get to the room\, pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome\, but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nEducated by Tara WestoverTara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho\, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her “head-for-the-hills bag”. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother\, a midwife and healer\, and in the winter she salvaged in her father’s junkyard. \n\n\n\nHer father forbade hospitals\, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions\, even burns from explosions\, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. \n\n\n\nThen\, lacking any formal education\, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University\, where she studied history\, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her\, taking her over oceans and across continents\, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far\, if there was still a way home.
