SUMMARY:Author Reading: Thomas Kneeland
DESCRIPTION:Join Thomas Kneeland for a reading\, Q&A\, & signing of their book ‘We Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep\,’ on June 8th at 2pm.\n\n\nJoin Thomas Kneeland at Indy Reads on June 8th from 2-4 pm for a reading\, disucssion\, and signing of his poetry collection We Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep. \nThis event is recommended for ages 13+. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nWe Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep \nFrom the advent of White Lion to the current state of systemic racism\, forcibly woven into institutions of power\, we’ve found ways to combat oppression. If we look at influential figures within our literary landscape\, we’ll find Amiri Baraka\, James Baldwin\, Maya Angelou\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, Toni Morrison\, Zora Neale Hurston\, and a host of prolific Black writers. They are the ones who set and reset the literary arts landscape\, time and time again\, to ensure that we would always have a place in the larger American and global society. \nThese writers\, most of whom were poets\, established the barriers between societal order and chaos. And while those barriers found\, and find\, themselves cracked by the thunderous\, battering ram of injustice\, there will always be new waves of literary cement to rebuild and strengthen the indestructible power of Black words. \nThis chapbook collection begins to unearth and restore color to the white-washed notions about the dark and terrifying facets of American history. \n\n\n\nMeet the Author \nThomas Kneeland is the author of We Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep (Marian University Department of Media\, Communication\, and Design) and a 2022 Frontier Poetry Global Poetry Prize finalist. He is a 2024 Speculative Play & Just Futurities Scholar-in-Residence\, which is funded by Indiana University\, the Mellon Foundation\, IUI Arts & Humanities Institute\, IUI Center for Africana Studies & Culture\, and the Ray Bradbury Center. He is also the Founder & Editor-in-Chief of The Elevation Review. His publication credits include Southern Humanities Review\, The Amistad\, The Rumpus\, Vagabond City Lit\, Up the Staircase Quarterly\, South Florida Poetry Journal\, and elsewhere. Thomas received his BA in English Writing from DePauw University\, an MA in Ministry from Wesley Seminary\, and an MFA in Poetry from Butler University. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Author Reading: John Young & Charlie Hopper
DESCRIPTION:Join John Young & Charlie Hopper on June 15th at 2 pm for a reading\, discussion\, & signing of their works!\n\n\nJoin local authors\, John Young and Charlie Hopper\, for a reading\, author discussion\, and signing of their books. John will be reading from his book Getting Huge. Charlie will be reading from his children’s book Thank You Day! \nThis event is recommended for all ages! \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nGetting Huge \nThis often-comic novel is for all who’ve worked with the wrong people in the wrong place\, and ached to escape―to start something new and find a sense of belonging. \nWhat begins as backyard diversion swells into an absurd obsession: to grow the world’s largest pumpkin and to build a pumpkin empire making everything from snacks to toilet paper. All to win him fame and fortune (and perhaps the affection of an alluring neighbor). Reverend John Crackstone sees his pumpkins\, especially the giant named Schwartz\, as his shot at greatness. And it becomes his chance to flip the tables on his affluent and perpetually disappointed deacons. \nWhile often comic\, Getting Huge resonates with the Great Resignation and quiet quitting\, as it shows how the pursuit of other people’s goals and ideas of success can cloud judgment. Until we are jolted into clarity and head for the hills. \n\n\n\nThank You\, Day! \nA young girl bursts with gratitude for all that the day has brought. \n“While children are often taught to show gratitude for people and things\, this book provides space for reveling in the natural world and the bounty therein. A lovely opportunity to stop and smell the roses–and say thank you.” -Kirkus Reviews \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: John Young \nA native of Indianapolis\, John Young is the author of two literary novels: Getting Huge and When the Coin Is in the Air\, as well as Fire in the Field & Other Stories. When he was eight years old\, John told his mother he wanted to be a scientist or a clown. So he went into advertising and figures he got pretty close. Along the way\, he graduated from Indiana University and earned an MFA from Emerson College\, Boston. \nAfter 20 years in Massachusetts\, he now lives with his wife and two kids in Cincinnati\, Ohio. \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Charlie Hopper \nCharlie Hopper is a songwriter who lives and works in Indianapolis\, Indiana. Thank You\, Day! is his first picture book.”If you want to expand it a little:”Charlie Hopper lives and works in Indianapolis\, where he writes advertisements\, songs\, and other things. Thank You\, Day! is his first picture book.” \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Author Reading: Cassidy Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join Cassidy Hall and Indy Reads on June 23rd at 2 pm for a reading\, Q&A\, and signing of her new book ‘Queering Contemplation.’\n\n\nJoin us for a reading of Cassidy Hall’s new book Queering Contemplation on June 23rd at 2pm. \nThis event is recommended for 15+ \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nQueering Contemplation \nWhat would it mean to queer contemplation? To disentangle contemplative spirituality from heteronormativity\, patriarchy\, and Eurocentricity\, and instead engage with openness\, curiosity\, and a little weirdness? The world of contemplative Christianity has yielded to the same voices for far too long\, many of whom are from centuries before our time\, with lives unlike our own\, and often from experiences disconnected from marginalization\, oppression\, and what it feels like to be an outsider. \nCassidy Hall\, an LGBTQIA+ Christian contemplative scholar and podcast host\, takes us on a journey to queer the contemplative tradition. For Hall\, queering is not solely about identifying as queer or applying queer theory; it is about what is gained by seeing things differently. “Queer\,” she says\, “is the way I tilt my head to look at the world.” As queerness reawakened her own contemplative life\, Hall discovered that queering and questioning the tradition allowed her to listen more closely to voices that are queer\, marginalized\, and oppressed–voices that have long existed but have often been overlooked or silenced. For Hall\, that also meant moving differently into contemplation\, into silence\, into liminality and ritual. In showing us the way\, she helps us envision what contemplative faith can look like\, what spiritual spaces we can reclaim for welcome–and how queering contemplation\, and lifting up queer contemplative voices\, frees us to seek the infinite possibility of our own identity and engage our spiritual lives with open hearts and open hands. \nWhether you’re queer or want to queer your own perspectives\, or whether you want to uncover the queerness and queer voices in the contemplative tradition–Hall throws open the doors of contemplative spirituality for all\, bringing us to contemplation in very new\, sometimes old\, but always queer ways. \n\n\n\nCassidy Hall (she/her/hers) (MA\, MDiv\, MTS) is an author\, award-winning filmmaker\, podcaster\, and leading voice in contemplative spirituality. She is the cohost of the Encountering Silence podcast and the creator of the Contemplating Now and Queering Contemplation podcasts. Her documentary films include In Pursuit of Silence and Day of a Stranger. Her book\, Queering Contemplation\, Finding Queerness in the Roots and Future of Contemplative Spirituality is about queering the contemplative tradition. Cassidy is widely published and resides in Indianapolis\, where she is studying for her Doctorate degree. Find out more at cassidyhall.com \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:One State/One Story: Guest Scholar Leah Milne
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 29 at 10:30am to welcome special guest Leah Milne\, as she shares Mirrors and Windows: Reading for & Beyond Empathy\n\n\nJoin us on June 29 at 10:30am to welcome special guest scholar Leah Milne\, as she shares Mirrors and Windows: Reading for & Beyond Empathy. This presentation and lecture is part of the One State/One Story program supported by Indiana Humanities. A Q&A will follow the presentation. \nIndiana Humanities’ One State/One Story program invites Hoosiers to engage deeply with a book as part of a statewide conversation tied to our current theme. \nThose in attendance will receive a free copy of Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake (while supplies last). This book is our Indy Reads Book Club selection for July 28th. Register here for that discussion. \nMirrors and Windows: Reading for & Beyond Empathy What are the connections between reading and empathy\, and why should we read outside of our comfort zones? \nScholar Rudine Sims Bishop and author Grace Lin liken reading to mirrors and windows. Some books are mirrors\, reflecting one’s identity. In the wake of recent race-based discussions in the US\, many readers sought windows\, books that offered insights into differing lives and experiences. This talk explores the connections between reading and empathy\, and the benefits of reading outside our comfort zones. What are strategies for reading empathetically? On the other hand\, what are the limits to this approach to empathy\, especially when reading across differences of race\, ability\, or gender? Do certain narratives more readily foster compassion? \n  \nThis event is recommended for all ages. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \nOne State/One Story: All That She Carried/Freedom Over Me is presented by Indiana Humanities in partnership with the Indiana Center for the Book and the Indiana State Library supported by Lilly Endowment. \n\n\n\nLeah Milne (she/her) is the author of Novel Subjects: Authorship as Radical Self-Care in Multiethnic American Narratives\, which won the 2021 Midwest Modern Language Association Book Award and examines multiculturalism and self-care in works by authors such as Carmen Maria Machado\, Ruth Ozeki\, Toni Morrison\, and Louise Erdrich. As an Associate Professor of English at the University of Indianapolis\, she teaches multicultural\, postcolonial\, and young adult literature. Her work has been published in journals and magazines such as The Journal of American Culture\, African American Review. Newsweek\, The Hill\, and Ms. Magazine. You can find out more at LeahMilne. com. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join Indianapolis Riot Reads for our June Book Club discussing Circe by Madeline Miller! \n\n\n\nTo get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nCirce by Madeline MillerIn the house of Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful\, like her father\, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.Threatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur\, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus\, the murderous Medea\, and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. But there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from\, or the mortals she has come to love.
