SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For April\, we’re reading The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler! \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Indy Reads\, as usual. To get to the room\, pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome\, but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nAbout the Riot Reads Book Club \n\n\n\nInterested in reading books by authors whose voices are often pushed to the margins? Join this book club focusing on books about social justice from authors who know what they’re talking about. Topics include culture\, disability\, politics\, race\, religion\, sexuality\, sex and gender\, socioeconomic status\, and anything else we want to put on the table. \n\n\n\nWe understand that life gets busy. And we also get that\, for many of us\, talking about books is a launching pad to talk about the things most important to us. So\, even if you haven’t had a chance to finish the book (or even get that far into it…)\, please feel free to join us for a lively discussion. Anyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nAbout The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler \n\n\n\nFrom a celebrated\, award-winning author\, a modern classic about a young girl fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world\, perfect for fans of N.K. Jemisin and Margaret Atwood. \n\n\n\nFifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina lives inside a gated community with her preacher father\, family\, and neighbors\, sheltered from the surrounding social chaos and anarchy caused by climate change and economic crisis. In a society where any vulnerability is a risk\, she suffers from hyperempathy–a debilitating sensitivity to others’ emotions. \n\n\n\nPrecocious and clear-eyed\, Lauren must make her voice heard in order to protect her loved ones from the imminent disasters her small community stubbornly ignores. But what begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: the birth of a new faith . . . and a startling vision of human destiny. \n\n\n\nLauren’s story continues in The Parable of the Talents. \n\n\n\n“In the ongoing contest over which dystopian classic is most applicable to our time\, Octavia Butler’s ‘Parable’ books may be unmatched.”–The New Yorker

She writes textbooks and children’s books about robotics and artificial intelligence. The book\, which was first published on March 26\, 2024\, is part of the “There’s A Robot!” series and is illustrated by Anak Bulu. Berry\, a professor of electrical and computer engineering\, wrote the book to introduce robotics and engineering to a young audience \n\n\nMeet Lori Cates Hand \n\n\n\nLori Cates Hand has been editing books for more than 30 years and currently manages US English-language adaptations of fiction and four-color nonfiction for a London-based division of a Big-5 publisher. She earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Evansville. In addition to several ghost-writing projects\, she has been published in the Gal’s Guide 2025 Anthology\, the Polk Street Review\, and various blogs. Lori volunteers extensively in her community\, including as vice chair of a city political committee and board member for the Gal’s Guide to the Galaxy women’s history library. Her hobbies include gardening\, fostering guinea pigs\, traveling in Europe\, winning at competitive trivia\, going to retro Brit-pop concerts\, wrangling memes\, and getting AquaFit. She and her husband\, Jason\, live in Noblesville\, Indiana. They have a daughter\, Catherine\, and a foster son\, Jonah\, both currently in college. \n\n\n\nHop in your DeLorean and visit a time with no internet\, no phones\, and no existential dread. Your Hoosier homegirl weaves a tale of growing up neuro-spicy and music-obsessed in a unique midsized city on the Ohio River in the 1970s and ’80s. From the arrival of her ancestors in the 19th century to her own exodus from Evansville in 1990\, come along for a joyride of indelible memories recounted in meticulous detail\, drawing from journals\, letters\, and a wide range of emotionally loaded pop music. Part oral history\, part memoir\, and part Gen-X manifesto\, this collection of life stories walks a mile in the Keds of a brainy\, curious\, anxious\, sensitive\, perfectionist\, ambitious\, boy-crazy girl in a changing world. \n\n\nMeet Fida Islaih \n \n\n\n\nFida Islaih is a self published author of 9 poetry books\, including Home Within. Islaih is also an independent book editor. Islaih writes about mental health\, cultural identity\, faith and self love. Her faith\, emotions\, cultural experiences and love for nature are the foundation of her poetry. Aside from her work\, she enjoys junk journaling and jigsaw puzzles \n\n\n\nHome Within is a powerful and intimate collection of poetry by Fida Islaih\, weaving together themes of healing\, self-discovery\, chronic illness\, cultural identity and emotional resilience. With raw vulnerability and lyrical grace\, Islaih explores the layered experiences of living with invisible pain\, both physical and emotional\, while navigating complex relationships with faith\, femininity and belonging.  Spanning topics from the inner battles of self-worth and mental health to the gentle triumphs of self-love and spiritual awakening\, each poem offers a fragment of the author’s journey back to herself. Through reflections on grief\, nostalgia\, trauma\, and hope\, Islaih invites readers into a sacred space where language becomes a form of liberation and healing. Each poem is a quiet act of courage\, offering comfort\, connection and the reminder that growth begins with softness.  This collection is a compassionate offering for anyone learning to find home within themselves-one tender\, honest\, and empowering line at a time. \n\n\nMeet Britt Kaufmann \n\n\n\nBritt Kaufmann is lucky to live in Indiana (close to her parents and adult children) where she writes in a room of her own. A former high school English teacher turned math tutor\, her most recent collection of poetry Midlife Calculus (Press 53) explores her love of puns and interdisciplinary connections. Her poems have appeared in Scientific American\, Cosmic Daffodil\, Soft Star\, The Journal of Humanistic Mathematics\, and J Journal: New Writing on Justice among others. She helped found the Carolina Mountains Literary Festival and hosted a monthly open-mic reading for more than a decade. Each week she volunteers at her local Indiana library and has joined the Poetry Society of Indiana. If she’s not writing or day-dreaming (which writers must take very seriously)\, she’s gardening\, reading science fiction\, or working as a doorperson for her cats. brittkaufmann.com \n\n\n\nBritt Kaufmann set out to take calculus for the first time at age 47 so she could cross it off her bucket list. She did not expect it to lead to her first full-length collection of poetry: Midlife Calculus. Since calculus is the study of how things change\, it’s a fitting title for poems about midlife\, about learning something difficult and new\, and the state of public education post pandemic. These poems\, often short\, bear witness to the struggles of both teachers and students. And\, like any woman’s romp through perimenopause\, the mood and tone vary wildly\, but always with a call to reflect and find moments of peace and purpose\, to “work literal equations / and maybe wonders\, / figure the balance between expectations / and grace.”  Winner of the 2025 Phillip H. McMath Award for Poetry\, the 2025 NAIWE Poetry Book Award\, and Silver distinction from The Book Awards at IPNE. \n\n\nMeet Tradara McLaurine \n\n\n\nTradara McLaurine is a three-time graduate of Indiana State University with degrees in Accounting\, Legal Studies\, and Student Affairs\, plus a Women’s Entrepreneurship certification from eCornell. With over 15 years in higher education\, she has excelled in career advising\, student conduct\, teaching\, and leadership development. Her expertise empowers individuals and organizations to achieve growth and success. \nAn accomplished author\, Tradara has written four children’s books that inspire confidence and creativity. Recognized for her leadership\, she was honored as one of Terre Haute’s “12 Under 40” in 2017. \nTradara holds certifications as a Certified Diversity Professional\, Predictive Index Practitioner\, and trainer for under-resourced college students. She has spoken at major conferences and universities\, with media features on Indy Now\, WURD Radio\, andCTV News. As an entrepreneur\, she owns a Challenge Island franchise\, delivering STEAM-based learning experiences for youth. \n\n\n\nIt’s not Sha-Dee-Ah\, Shaw-Day-Uh\, or Sha-Dee-Uh…it’s Shadaia!  \nFrustrated with everyone mispronouncing her name\, Shadaia decides she needs a nickname. Maybe that will help everyone get it right. I Want a Nickname is a picture book about empowerment\, self-esteem\, and loving the meaning behind your name. \n\n\nMeet Twan Parent \n\n\n\nA native and resident of Indianapolis\, Tawn Parent has been a professional writer and editor for 30 years. The Wrong Place\, her first collection of poetry and essays\, was published in 2024 by Finishing Line Press. Her work has appeared in such publications as Tipton Poetry Journal\, Home Planet News Online\, Anti-Heroin Chic\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, Flying Island Journal\, Gal’s Guide Anthology and Ignite Studio Anthology. She has worked for various business publications and also served as proofreader for four books. \n\n\n\nThe Wrong Place attempts to answer the question: How does a mother cope when her worst nightmare comes true? This collection of poems and essays chronicles the author’s journey alongside her young son as he is diagnosed and treated for a rare cancer. Readers follow the family as they learn the vocabulary of cancer\, develop a new way of parenting\, and grieve the loss of their son’s innocence. The family navigates endless medical procedures and hospital stays while seeking to maintain a sense of themselves outside of “cancer world.” Throughout\, the author relies on humor and hope to pull her through. \n\n\nMeet Terri Roberts-Leonard \n\n\n\nOriginally from Dayton\, Ohio\, Terri Roberts‑Leonard brings over 20 years of experience in education\, nonprofit service\, and community leadership\, guided by a strong commitment to inclusion and lifelong learning. She holds a BA in Communication from the University of Cincinnati\, an MEd from Xavier University\, and an MA in School Counseling from Morehead State University. Terri has worked in higher education at institutions including Ball State University and Indiana University. \nHighly engaged in the community\, Terri has served on the boards of Windrose Health Network\, Resources of Hope\, and the United Way of Johnson County. She is a graduate of Leadership Johnson County\, a professional mentor\, and a children’s book author passionate about inspiring young readers and strengthening communities. \n\n\n\nThis heartwarming tale is extra special because it was co-authored by my 5-year-old daughter Jordan Leonard! \nIn this story\, Danda is joined by Jordy Giraffe and Mason Mouse. Together\, they discover the value of friendship\, the importance of accepting differences\, and the courage to be brave and bold. It’s a delightful adventure that encourages kindness\, understanding\, and teamwork. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can.
