SUMMARY:Author Reading: Karol Lagodzki
DESCRIPTION:Join Karol Lagodzki on September 28th at 2pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of their book\, ‘Controlled Conversations’!\n\n\nJoin Karol Lagodzki on September 28th at Indy Reads from 2-4pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of his book: Controlled Conversations. \nThere will be a reading\, discussion\, Q&A session\, and signing to follow. \nThis event is recommended for all ages. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nControlled Conversations \nIn 1982 Soviet-controlled Poland—a time and place of suspicion and mistrust—when geopolitical forces and violent men descend upon her little town of Zygmuntowo\, Emilia must decide if she’s willing to risk prison or worse for self-respect and for her unexpected lover.   \nOrdered to monitor the calls she connects\, Emilia\, a telephone switchboard operator\, overhears a mysterious coded conversation. It continues to distract her\, but not as much as the growing realization that she’s falling in unsanctioned love with her best friend Kalina. Meanwhile\, outside the city of Frombork\, Antek\, a shipyard engineer and a Solidarity labor union treasurer\, escapes from prison and works to recover the union’s money\, a task which in time leads him to Emilia’s town. In the metropolitan city of Gdańsk\, Roman\, a secret police major\, wants the money for himself and dreams of his own escape and the magical beaches of Rio de Janeiro.   \nThe only daughter of a local Communist Party apparatchik\, Emilia has enjoyed a sheltered life\, but with the advent of martial law\, her mother’s influence can no longer shield her. She faces choices she never expected to make when she discovers her best friend’s and lover’s involvement with the resistance. With new allies and enemies in town\, the time to choose a side is now.  \nIn his debut novel\, Karol Lagodzki asks: What separates people who transcend their fear and take risks for the sake of change from the rest of us? The answer is up to the readers.  \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Karol Lagodzki \nKarol Lagodzki\, a native of Poland\, is an exophonic\, English-language author of fiction. His stories have appeared in Invisible City\, Storm Cellar\, NUNUM\, Streetlight Magazine\, and elsewhere\, and he has won Panel Magazine’s Ruritania Prize for Short Fiction. Controlled Conversations is his debut novel.  \nHe holds an MFA in creative writing\, buys more books than he can read or afford—usually novels and short story collections\, though he’s been known to pick up an odd book of poetry or accessible science—and gives back to the literary community by serving as a reader for several journals. Karol’s non-writing careers have ranged from fixing stucco while dangling from roofs in Paris to sorting through human cadaver heads in Florida to developing and marketing medical devices for critically ill people in the American Midwest\, but his true ambition is to remain a student for as long as he possibly can and make sure more stories make it out onto the page.  \nKarol lives halfway down a Southern Indiana ravine with his wonderful\, unconventional family\, a scurry of squirrels\, a passel of possums\, a gaze of raccoons\, a descent of woodpeckers\, and a large dog.  \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For October\, we’ll read When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nWhen We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo \n\n\n\nA mythic love story set in Trinidad\, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo’s radiant debut is a masterwork of lush imagination and exuberant storytelling–a spellbinding and hopeful novel about inheritance\, loss\, and love’s seismic power to heal. \n\n\n\nIn the old house on a hill\, where the city meets the rainforest\, Yejide’s mother is dying. She is leaving behind a legacy that now passes to Yejide: one St Bernard woman in every generation has the power to shepherd the city’s souls into the afterlife. But after years of suffering her mother’s neglect and bitterness\, Yejide is looking for a way out. \n\n\n\nRaised in the countryside by a devout Rastafarian mother\, Darwin has always abided by the religious commandment not to interact with death. He has never been to a funeral\, much less seen a dead body. But when the only job he can find is grave digging\, he must betray the life his mother built for him in order to provide for them both. Newly shorn of his dreadlocks and his past\, and determined to prove himself\, Darwin finds himself adrift in a city electric with possibility and danger. \n\n\n\nYejide and Darwin will meet inside the gates of Fidelis\, an ancient and sprawling cemetery\, where the dead lie uneasy in their graves and a reckoning with fate beckons them both.

Through his uMs lens\, his poems transfigure and chronicle the humanity of the past\, present\, and future of Black Midwesterners (and all globe-stompers)— transforming our dead and living into one sacrosanct body that traverses this earth with our surreal and haggard breaths. Praise for Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest “…Whitman affected me this way\, and Dickinson did\, and so did T.S. Eliot…I want to make his wild one-of-a-kind poetic voice my own\, and I want to write about what he writes about\, the world that needs to be written about\, the world ignored by too many people\, the world of brutality against the good people deprived of justice and love.” —John Guzlowski\, author of Echoes of Tattered Tongues “Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest is about loving\, losing\, and honoring the moments of life we do have…his perspective on this life\, now\, in this place\, holds us accountable to find all the “beautiful things” that will break our hearts.” —Sarah Sandman\, author of The Sinew of 47 Years and I Speak Moan “…this man’s poems are liable to jump right up off the page and dance\, so infused are they with righteous rhythms. But the moves aren’t just for show. Crisler is after the heart and the hurt inside the contemporary experience.” —Justin Hamm\, author of Drinking Guinness With the Dead “All the feels I’ve ever felt about what it means to live and love and lay claim to the Midwest are expressed in Crisler’s poetry. This is what it is to be seen. Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest…is a message\, a critical intervention\, a rapturous ode to a way of being.” —Terrion L. SUMMARY:Author Panel: Publication Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Join a panel of three authors at Indy Reads on October 11th from 5-6:30 pm as they share and discuss their journeys to getting published!\n\n\nInterested in getting published but do not know where to start? Have questions about getting published and want first-hand accounts of the industry? This event is just for you! \nJoin Indy Reads and a panel of four authors\, Wes Blake\, Robin Lee Lovelace\, and Brian Muriel\, from the University of Indianapolis’s Etchings Press as they share and discuss their publication journeys on October 6th at 5pm. \n\n\nMeet the Panelists \n\n\n\nWes Blake \nWes Blake’s fiction and essays have appeared in Louisiana Literature Journal\, Blood & Bourbon\, Book of Matches\, Jelly Bucket\, White Wall Review\, and elsewhere. His novella\, Pineville Trace\, won the Etchings Press Book Prize at the University of Indianapolis. Lee Martin\, author of the Pulitzer Prize Finalist\, The Bright Forever\, described him as “a writer to watch.” His novel\, Antenna\, was a semifinalist for the UNO Press Lab Prize. He holds an MFA from the Bluegrass Writers Studio. He lives in Kentucky. \n\n\n\nPineville Trace \nAfter being sentenced to a minimum-security prison in eastern Kentucky\, former southern revival preacher and confidence man\, Frank Russet\, escapes. Taking only a cat named Buffalo and a desire to outrun his former life\, he journeys to the fringes of society. As he struggles to survive\, Frank confronts his past\, seeking redemption amidst the wilderness. As Frank traverses the shadowy edges of society\, he encounters remnants of his former self\, forcing him to confront his deepest regrets and desires. In Pineville Trace\, Blake’s haunting prose captures the essence of a man on the brink of transformation\, urging readers to ponder the thin line between redemption and damnation. \n\n\n\nRobin Lee Lovelace \nRobin Lee Lovelace is a mixed-race African-American writer who usually writes short fiction. In 2019\, she won the Etchings Press annual competition for her novella Savonne\, Not Vonny. She was named as an honoree in the Emerging Author category for the 2020 Indiana Author’s Awards. In 2021\, she was one of the three finalists for the Don Belton Fiction Prize for her collection of stories A Wild Region\, a Stowe Story Labs SAG Indie Finalist for Savonne\, Not Vonny\, and the winner of the Marguerite McGlinn short fiction prize for her story “Uncle\,” awarded by Rosemont College and Philadelphia Stories. Her nonfiction essay “Different Times\, Different Degrees\, Same Shit” appeared in the 2023 summer edition of the Indiana Review. Robin’s latest book is a collection of short stories titled A Wild Region. In 2024\, Robin was named one of ten finalists for the ScreenCraft Cinematic Book Competition for Savonne\, Not Vonny. \n\n\n\nSavonne\, Not Vonny \nFrom her Indianapolis home\, upstairs from the whorehouse where her mother works\, young Savonne is taken deep into the bayous of New Orleans. There she learns about Voodoo magic from her aged great-grandfather and meets the dangerous Diamond John\, who is out to steal her family’s powerful conjuring book. With its mix of rural magic and urban realism\, Savonne\, Not Vonny invites readers to reimagine the cultural traditions of New Orleans\, pushing the boundaries of reality\, and redefining home. \n\n\n\nBrian Muriel \nBrian Muriel is a high school English teacher and poet from Naperville\, Illinois\, where he lives with his wife and young family. His work has appeared in West Trade Review\, La Piccioletta Barca\, The Ekphrastic Review\, and others \n\n\n\nElliott\nElliott\, a poetry chapbook\, contains interrelated poems that reanimate the experience of being a caregiver to a child with special needs. The collection surrounds a father teetering on the brink of both hope and heartache—triumph and tragedy. Ultimately\, all caregivers will resonate with Elliott. The sheer act of giving care to a loved one enmeshes a person into the profound contradictions found in life and loss. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Thomas Kneeland & Amie Whittemore
DESCRIPTION:Join Thomas Kneeland and Amie Whittemore on October 19 th at 2pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of their works!\n\n\nJoin Thomas Kneeland and Amie Whittemore on October 19 th at Indy Reads from 2-4pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of their works: We Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep by Thomas Kneeland and Nest of Matches by Amie Whittemore. \nThere will be a reading\, discussion\, Q&A session\, and a signing to follow. \nThis event is recommended for ages 18+. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nWe Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep \nFrom the advent of White Lion to the current state of systemic racism\, forcibly woven into institutions of power\, we’ve found ways to combat oppression. If we look at influential figures within our literary landscape\, we’ll find Amiri Baraka\, James Baldwin\, Maya Angelou\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, Toni Morrison\, Zora Neale Hurston\, and a host of prolific Black writers. They are the ones who set and reset the literary arts landscape\, time and time again\, to ensure that we would always have a place in the larger American and global society. \nThese writers\, most of whom were poets\, established the barriers between societal order and chaos. And while those barriers found\, and find\, themselves cracked by the thunderous\, battering ram of injustice\, there will always be new waves of literary cement to rebuild and strengthen the indestructible power of Black words. \nThis chapbook collection begins to unearth and restore color to the white-washed notions about the dark and terrifying facets of American history. \n\n\n\nNest of Matches \nAmie Whittemore’s Nest of Matches is a lavish declaration of the beauty of the natural world\, queer identity\, and of the imagination set free. Whittemore’s third collection explores the complexities of love—romantic\, familial\, and love for place—and wonders at cycles of life\, finding that: “Every habit / even love—strangest / of them all—offers exhaustion / and renewal.” Moving seamlessly from meditations on the moon’s phases to explorations of dream spaces to searches for meaning through patterns of love and loss\, Whittemore’s work embodies the mysteries of dichotomies—grief and joy\, consciousness and unconsciousness\, habit and spontaneity—and how they coexist to create our identities. Throughout the collection\, Whittemore reveals how interior nature manifests into exterior habits and how physical landscapes shape the psyche. \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Thomas Kneeland \nThomas Kneeland is the author of We Be Walkin’ Blackly in the Deep (Marian University Department of Media\, Communication\, and Design) and a 2022 Frontier Poetry Global Poetry Prize finalist. He is a 2024 Speculative Play & Just Futurities Scholar-in-Residence\, which is funded by Indiana University\, the Mellon Foundation\, IUI Arts & Humanities Institute\, IUI Center for Africana Studies & Culture\, and the Ray Bradbury Center. He is also the Founder & Editor-in-Chief of The Elevation Review. His publication credits include Southern Humanities Review\, The Amistad\, The Rumpus\, Vagabond City Lit\, Up the Staircase Quarterly\, South Florida Poetry Journal\, and elsewhere. Thomas received his BA in English Writing from DePauw University\, an MA in Ministry from Wesley Seminary\, and an MFA in Poetry from Butler University. \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Amie Whittemore \nAmie Whittemore (she/her) is the author of the poetry collections Glass Harvest (Autumn House Press)\, Star-tent: A Triptych (Tolsun Books)\, and Nest of Matches (Autumn House). She was the 2020-2021 Poet Laureate of Murfreesboro\, Tennessee\, and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. Her poems have won multiple awards\, including a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize\, and her poems and prose have appeared in The Gettysburg Review\, Nashville Review\, Smartish Pace\, Pleiades\, and elsewhere. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Alessandra Lynch
DESCRIPTION:Join Alessandra Lynch on October 26th from 2-4pm for a reading\, signing\, and discussion of their new work\, ‘Wish Ave.’\n\n\nJoin Alessandra Lynch at Indy Reads on October 26th from 2-4pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of her newest work\, Wish Ave. \nThis event is recommened for ages 13+. \n\n\n\nWish Ave \nWish Ave is a dream-like narrative that combines three distinctive voices as it simultaneously loses and gains connections to others\, plants\, places\, memories\, and beyond. Memories are reanimated\, reassessed\, and re-envisioned. Voices carry the history of a life\, the lives of those they’ve lived with\, known\, encountered\, interacted with. The two voices and the speaker’s voice carry the poems that cross time\, relationships\, boundaries between life and death. The voices create deep portraits of mentors\, family members\, and friends. Lone?liness\, tragedy\, art\, death\, music\, communion\, connection\, and consolation are all found here. There is palpable intensity\, almost like the book is vibrating with trepidation\, sorrow\, fear\, love\, vibrancy\, and uncertainty. The poems move water-like through visions and memory\, personal myth\, and prophecy. They don’t feel beholden to expectations but free and insistent upon existing in their own space\, on their own terms. There is a lot of risk in these poems\, and the reward is in the connections and space between them. \n“It is as though Wish Ave is the response to the bird in Eliot’s first quartet\, about just how much reality humans can bear. Alessandra Lynch has written beyond the moment\, and deeply of the moment\, a form of salvation we must all hope to earn.” \n—Bin Ramke\, author of Earth on Earth \n\n\n\nMeet the Author \nAlessandra Lynch‘s most recent collection of poetry\, Pretty Tripwire\, (semi-finalist for the Julie Suk Award) was published in 2021.
