Williger \nJ. M. Williger\, a new author originally from Porter\, Indiana\, makes his debut with The Rites of Iron\, the first novel in The Trials of Gnash series. Before he started writing fantasy\, J.M. earned his bachelor’s in Kinesiology from Indiana University. After that\, he spent some time working with IU Health Bloomington’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab Program\, before moving to Indianapolis\, where he now works with ATI Physical Therapy. \nAbout The Rites of Iron \nThe Rushali Desert is many things–a swirling tempest of red sand\, an arid landscape scoured by incredible heat\, and a breeding ground for dangerous beasts. But for Gnash\, a young warrior raised in a tribe of wandering nomads\, the desert is simply home. \nThrough the Rites of Iron\, a coming-of-age ceremony for young warriors in his tribe\, Gnash discovers what it means to be truly strong as he fights through the perils of his desolate homeland. \n \nAbout K. R. S. McEntire \nK. R. S. McEntire hails from the generation that dashed through platform 9 ¾\, fell in love with vegetarian vampires and motorcycle-riding werewolves\, and helped take down a \ncorrupt government during the Hunger Games. With a background in Journalism and Public Relations\, McEntire is always sharing stories. She runs the Facebook page Diverse Books With Magic\, where she promotes diversity in speculative fiction. She is the author of the YA dystopian trilogy The Eden Saga and the NA fantasy A Dance of Blood and Destiny. McEntire lives in Indianapolis with her husband and two sons. Connect with her online at krsmcentire.com. \nAbout Saving Eden\nSixteen-year-old Angela thinks she and her father are the last survivors on Earth. She dreams of adventure and romance but only finds it in books. In the confines of her garden paradise\, she’s untouched by contaminants that caused the rest of humanity to mutate into murderous beasts or die. But the lure of the outside world is irresistible. \nWhen a seventeen-year-old boy stumbles upon Angela’s home with news about a thriving community\, she dares to leave her garden for the first time. The dystopian society that she finds is deadlier than she expected\, and the wardens tasked with protecting the settlement have murderous secrets. Does she have what it takes to stay alive and save humanity in the process? \nThe Hunger Games meets The Darkest Minds in a thrilling coming-of-age adventure. \nAbout That Girl Who Ran Off and Kissed a Vampire \nEighteen-year-old Raven has always had a plan: college\, a stable job\, and marriage to her high school sweetheart—all within the safe boundaries of her comfort zone. As a neurodivergent girl adopted into a family of high achievers\, she understands the importance of stability. But when a single disastrous day leaves her without a job\, her best friend\, or her boyfriend\, Raven’s carefully planned future unravels. \nDesperate for a fresh start\, Raven takes a leap of faith in the form of a mysterious job offer that lands her in a magical realm where humans coexist with fae\, dragons\, vampires\, and other fantastical creatures.  Her unlikely guide is Hunter\, a snarky and secretive vampire who insists her bloodline holds the key to breaking an ancient curse. \nReluctantly\, Raven agrees to help\, embarking on a quest filled with impromptu hip-hip concerts in medieval taverns\, sassy talking unicorns\, and growing feelings for Hunter. But as sparks fly\, so do her suspicions about his true intentions. To save a kingdom—and herself—Raven must uncover the secrets of her heritage and decide if she’s willing to risk everything for a magical world and a love that feels too impossible to be real. \n \nAbout Tony Spataro \nTony Spataro grew up in rural Indiana before moving to Fort Wayne for college\, finally landing in Indianapolis where he has lived for more than 20 years. He is a fine artist\, a writer and a self-proclaimed music and coffee snob. His collection of new and used vinyl is one of his most prized possessions. \nHe has dealt with anxiety\, depression and spiraling thoughts for most of his life but through therapy and his art\, he manages it. He has come to embrace his mental health as a part of his life and not something he has to battle daily. \nHe has been married to his wonderful wife for more than 15 years and they have two creative kids together. They reside on the northeast side of Indy. \nTony Spataro published his first book\, My. Mind. Races. in 2021 and since that time has been published in several books and recently released his new poetry collection\, Little.Controlled.Fires. \nTony is a co-founder of the poetry/writers collective\, Indy Untitled (@indyuntitled)\, which hosts an open mic/workshop and published its first poetry zine in early 2025. \nYou can find more about him on Instagram @little.controlled.fires \nAbout My. Mind. Races.   \nMy mom\, Diane\, died when I was only 6\, from cancer. This one event shaped much of who I’d become over the next 40-some years. Who knows how my life would have been different had this terrible disease not taken her from me? I consider it sometimes\, but don’t ponder too long. Frankly\, if I’m being honest\, I am happy with who I’ve become. Sure\, I struggle with depression\, anxiety and other mental issues that come with a less-than-ideal childhood. But I’ve come to learn to not only deal with them\, but I also now have the tools to overcome them. That wasn’t always the case. I don’t know if my mind ever stood a chance. \nMy. Mind. Races. is a deeply personal look into love unrequited\, depression\, anxiety and struggles with alcoholism. Coming to terms with my own issues. In between the poems\, I’ve included some complex doodles created especially for this book. These doodles represent my mind\, giving you a feel for how it “races.” Feel free to color them in and tag me on social media. Let me see what you’ve come up with. You can find me on Instagram @little.controlled.fires. \nI want this book to be a starting point for conversations about your own struggles. This isn’t an end game\, but a beginning. I can tell you\, putting your heart out in the world is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do\, but I truly believe that if those who struggle with mental health issues don’t speak up\, others will feel alone in their own pain. Share your story! You never know when someone else needs to hear it. \nAbout Little.Controlled.Fires \nLittle.Controlled.Fires. is my post-covid journey from hitting rock bottom to finding life after a mental health breakdown. The aftershocks of the pandemic were hard felt and long lasting. During this time\, I saw my anxiety and depression start to consume me in ways I never thought possible. I lost my father and others who were close to me and my family. I was in my darkest period\, but it was through therapy and writing that I saw a light and a path forward. I found myself rediscovering what makes me happy. I challenged myself to embrace the me I was meant to be\, looked at art as a weapon and a shield\, and decided to start living fully. \nIt is my hope that my words will help others know that you are not alone. \n \nCaleb Clark is an independent author of dark fantasy and horror. His first novella\, Tanner’s Place\, comes out this fall. \nAside from writing\, Caleb enjoys painting and playing Warhammer\, rambling about books\, and teaching his kids about the dark arts (trading card games). \nAbout Tanner’s Place \nLooking for a clean start far from the modernity of Attimus\, Esha and her bodyguard Nur’rosh have taken a new job. Far to the north\, the pair finds themselves in a rundown village called Tanner’s Place\, and it’s clear the townsfolk aren’t fond of outsiders. \nOn the night of the Reaper’s Moon\, Esha and Nur must fend off the faceless demons in the woods and the ones they carry within. But nobody leaves Tanner’s Place alive. In fact\, no one leaves at all. \n \nSavannah J. Goins is the author of multiple sweet\, swoony\, and spice-free YA fantasy novels. While working at an exotic animal clinic\, she came in contact with both tiger and dragon blood more than once. Whether she has magical abilities as a result is yet to be determined. When not writing\, she hangs out with her family\, draws zentangles\, and helps homeless dragons find forever homes in the real world by volunteering with an exotic animal rescue. \nAbout The Gwythienian (Odan Terridor Trilogy\, Book 1)  \nWhen turning invisible at her high school attracts unexpected attention from another world\, Enzi’s drawn into a fight for survival in a magical realm. \nWhile she’s busy missing her dad on another lonely birthday\, bullies pick that moment to notice she’s alive. She tries her new trick of turning invisible and heads home early. \nThere\, she finds a letter she wasn’t meant to read and discovers that her mom’s been lying to her for years. She has to know the truth. There’s a connection between the letter and her ability to turn invisible\, which summons a dragon from another world into hers. \nWhen the dragon demands her help to save his realm from ruin\, she’d trade her old high school problems for this mess any day. But with another more devious dragon on their trail\, she can’t turn back now. Whether she likes it or not\, she has a magical realm to save-if she doesn’t die trying. \nFull of magic\, mystery\, and slow-burn feels\, this YA portal fantasy adventure is perfect for readers who enjoy no-spice romance\, talking animals\, and female protagonists finding their true strength. \nAbout Whisper of Weapons (Castors of Wrynford\, Book 1)  \nIf she succeeds\, the life of her dreams is within reach. If she fails\, she loses everything. \nSixteen-year-old Mella’s future among the aristocracy of her medieval city rests on a single test to produce a strong and beautiful animal familiar. However\, when she fails to produce any creature at all\, she loses everything in one crushing blow. \nBut then she gets a second chance. \nWorking with teenagers from the lowliest of places\, Mella begins to learn that status isn’t everything. With their help\, she trains an impressive avian in the shadows and passes her off as her familiar. \nShe’s constantly terrified someone might realize the creature isn’t what she seems. \nIf they’re caught\, the avian’s life will be forfeit and Mella will lose her new friends and the last hope of a future she has left. \nIf you like cutthroat competitions\, medieval settings\, and found family\, you’ll love Whisper of Weapons! \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For October\, we’re reading Too Soon by Betty Shamieh! \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Indy Reads\, as usual. To get to the room\, pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome\, but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nAbout the Riot Reads Book Club \n\n\n\nInterested in reading books by authors whose voices are often pushed to the margins? Join this book club focusing on books about social justice from authors who know what they’re talking about. Topics include culture\, disability\, politics\, race\, religion\, sexuality\, sex and gender\, socioeconomic status\, and anything else we want to put on the table. \n\n\n\nWe understand that life gets busy. And we also get that\, for many of us\, talking about books is a launching pad to talk about the things most important to us. So\, even if you haven’t had a chance to finish the book (or even get that far into it…)\, please feel free to join us for a lively discussion. Anyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nAbout Too Soon by Betty Shamieh \n\n\n\nArabella gets an unexpected chance at love when she’s thrust into a conflict and history she’s tried to avoid all her life. \n\n\n\nZoya is playing matchmaker for her last unmarried granddaughter and stirring up buried memories. \n\n\n\nNaya is keeping a secret from her children that will change all their lives. \n\n\n\nThirty-five-year-old Arabella\, a New York theatre director whose dating and career prospects are drying up\, is offered an opportunity to direct a risqué cross-dressing interpretation of a Shakespeare classic—that might garner international attention—in the West Bank. Her mother\, Naya\, and grandmother\, Zoya\, hatch a plot to match her with Aziz\, a Palestinian American doctor volunteering in Gaza. Arabella agrees to meet Aziz\, since her growing feelings for Yoav\, a celebrated Israeli American theatre designer\, seem destined for disaster… \n\n\n\nWith biting hilarity\, Too Soon introduces us to a trio of bold and unforgettable voices. This dramatic saga follows one family’s epic journey fleeing war-torn Jaffa in 1948\, chasing the American Dream in Detroit and San Francisco in the sixties and seventies\, hustling in the New York theatre scene post-9/11\, and daring to stage a show in Palestine in 2012. Upon learning one of them is living on borrowed time\, the three women fight to live\, make art\, and love on their own terms. A funny\, sexy\, and heart-wrenching literary debut\, Too Soon illuminates our shared history and asks\, how can we set ourselves free?

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Daniel Lassell and Ruben Quesada
DESCRIPTION:Join Daniel Lassell and Ruben Quesada on Sunday\, October 5 at 1:30pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of their works. \n\n\n\nThere will be a reading\, discussion\, Q&A session\, and a signing to follow. \n\n\n\nThis event is recommended for ages 16+. \n\n\n\nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming for nearly 500 adult students and their families each year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Lassell is the author of Spit\, winner of the Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize\, and two chapbooks\, Ad Spot and The Emptying Earth. His poems have appeared in Prairie Schooner\, Arkansas International\, Colorado Review\, Birmingham Poetry Review\, and Poet Lore. Raised in Kentucky\, he now lives in Bloomington\, Indiana.  \n\n\n\nAbout Frame Inside a Frame \n\n\n\nFrame Inside a Frame by Daniel Lassell explores the boundaries\, overlaps\, and portals of memory and seeking. Lassell’s collection is wildly surprising at every turn\, greeting readers with visceral childhood memories\, gritty landscapes of climate collapse\, a quirky neighbor transfixed on love\, a sexual predator who breaks into homes\, a bat that disrupts sleep\, a llama that bites off a man’s ear\, a dog that eats the family’s Thanksgiving turkey\, farmers condemning their machinery to rot in fields\, a cow carcass that washes up on a city’s waterfront park\, a hooligan feeding possums trash\, and pollen everywhere. Taken together\, Frame Inside a Frame is a constellation eyed toward the exploration of distance and meanings inherent within distance and proximity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuben Quesada edited the award-winning anthology Latinx Poetics: Essays on the Art of Poetry. His poetry and translations appear in the Best American Poetry series\, the New York Times Magazine\, Essential Queer Voices of U.S. Poetry\, and elsewhere. Ruben’s writing has received fellowships and grants from the American Literary Translators Association\, the Jentel Foundation\, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, and the Illinois Arts Council. His new poetry collection\, Brutal Companion\, won the Barrow Street Editors Prize and was recognized as A Notable Book of 2024 by the University of California. In the spring of 2025\, Steppenwolf Theater Company commissioned him to write a poem for Jordan Harrison’s The Antiquities.  \n\n\n\nAbout Brutal Companion (Barrow Street Press\, 2024) \n\n\n\nThe prize-winning Brutal Companion is a disturbing and visceral collection of poetry on identity\, sexuality\, bereavement\, and personal growth. Ruben Quesada’s lyrical intensity and vivid imagery delve into LGBT existence\, providing a fierce meditation on survival to wrest meaning and resilience from even the darkest places. Quesada grieves and celebrates human connection\, using nature to reflect the inner landscape. Using several poetic forms to stress trauma and desire\, Brutal Companion follows gay life in all its beauty and cruelty. Reviewers say the collection opens with brutal directness and continues a dedication to vulnerability and truth-telling that creates space for commonly silenced experiences. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \n\n\n\nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. Their conversation will explore Ruba’s role in stewarding Indy Reads\, the outsized impact literacy plays in our lived experiences\, and how Indy Reads fights to make all forms of literacy accessible to our most vulnerable community members. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this live event on Friday\, October 17 at 7pm\, at Indy Reads in Fountain Square. Through conversation-based media and storytelling in all forms\, Patrick works to provide new perspectives on the world – and people – around us and empower both individuals and organizations to meet difference\, not with fear and judgement\, but with curiosity and affirmation. \n\n\n\nConversation Piece: www.conversationpiecepod.com \n\n\n\nThe Janchi Show: www.janchishow.com \n\n\n\nPersonal: www.patrickintheworld.me \n\n\n\nInstagram: www.instagram.com/patrickintheworld \n\n\n\nLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrickintheworld/ \n\n\n\nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ConversationPiecePodcast \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuba Marshood oversees Indy Reads’ programs\, brand\, and growth to advance Indy Reads’ vision of literacy for all. She returned to the US with an eye on local impact and brought her international perspective to the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (now EEC)\, where she launched their trademark Destination Workforce program\, emphasizing the power of collaboration to create meaningful\, student-centered transformation. An alumna of the Princeton AlumniCorps’ Emerging Leaders program\, Ruba received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland and her Master of Environmental Management and International Development from Duke University. Ruba proudly serves on the Board of Directors of the Museum of the Palestinian People\, the first of its kind in the nation’s capital. A first-generation American who grew up in New Jersey\, Ruba is fluent in Arabic\, and a published photographer and photo-editor. She moved to Indy to become a Hoosier and embrace her role at Indy Reads in the summer of 2022. Ruba is inspired daily by the potential of literacy and education to advance society and by the wonderful team she gets to work alongside toward advancing this possibility. She enjoys exploring the city with her kids\, dancing\, and good food with great company.
