SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For September\, we’ll read Nevada by Imogen Binnie! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nNevada by Imogen Binnie \n\n\n\nA beloved and blistering cult classic and finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction finally back in print\, Nevada follows a disaffected trans woman as she embarks on a cross-country road trip. \n\n\n\nMaria Griffiths is almost thirty and works at a used bookstore in New York City while trying to stay true to her punk values. She’s in love with her bike but not with her girlfriend\, Steph. She takes random pills and drinks more than is good for her\, but doesn’t inject anything except\, when she remembers\, estrogen\, because she’s trans. Everything is mostly fine until Maria and Steph break up\, sending Maria into a tailspin\, and then onto a cross-country trek in the car she steals from Steph. She ends up in the backwater town of Star City\, Nevada\, where she meets James\, who is probably but not certainly trans\, and who reminds Maria of her younger self. As Maria finds herself in the awkward position of trans role model\, she realizes that she could become James’s savior–or his downfall. \n\n\n\nOne of the most beloved cult novels of our time and a landmark of trans literature\, Imogen Binnie’s Nevada is a blistering\, heartfelt\, and evergreen coming-of-age story\, and a punk-smeared excavation of marginalized life under capitalism. Guided by an instantly memorable\, terminally self-aware protagonist–and back in print featuring a new afterword by the author–Nevada is the great American road novel flipped on its head for a new generation.

SUMMARY:Author Reading: Heidi Beierle
DESCRIPTION:Join Heidi Beierle on September 26th at 5pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of her new memoir\, ‘Heidi Across America’!\n\n\nJoin Heidi Beierle on September 26th at Indy Reads from 5-6:30pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of her new memoir\, Heidi Across America. \nThere will be a reading\, discussion\, Q&A session\, and a signing to follow. \nThis event is recommended for all ages. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nHeidi Across America \nA memoir of homecoming – Heidi Across America is a gritty story of how opening our hearts to others enables us to open our hearts to ourselves and love what we find there. \nIn the summer of 2010\, Heidi Beierle had just finished her first year of graduate studies in community and regional planning and decided to pedal her bicycle solo from her home on the west coast across rural America to the Preserving the Historic Road conference in Washington\, D.C. What started as a research trip turned into an intimately physical and psychological encounter with self and nationhood. \nHeidi was 35 at the time and didn’t love much about herself except her ability to endure grueling physical undertakings. She viewed her journey as an opportunity to fix her failures and insufficiencies. There were also some research questions she wanted to explore: Why do people live in small towns and what do they like about it? Did a bicyclist like herself bring economic benefit to the small towns she visited? What could communities do to support or invite cyclists to stay in their towns? What could cyclists do to support the communities? \nAlong the way\, she was surprised by the kindness of strangers and the emotional pinch of traveling through Wyoming where she grew up. Her journey led her through the Plains and into the Ozarks where the heat climbed to agonizing temperatures and every pedal stroke in the heat felt one closer to death. By the time she completed the trip\, Heidi discovered a newfound compassion for herself and a growing love for her country. Strangers opened their hearts to her and in turn\, she opened her heart to herself. \nAnd her questions began to change and mirror things many Americans are asking themselves today: How can I be okay in my own skin? What does it mean to be enough? How do I satisfy my desire to travel without harming the planet? What does it mean to love America? \nFor many young people\, it is a rite of passage to light out on an adventure to see the world and expose themselves to new experiences\, but we don’t often talk about how Americans seeing America can open us to the differences\, awe\, and wonder available right here in our nation. Heidi Across America offers a journey to self-love\, empathy\, consideration for others\, and respect for the spirit of place as pathways to find connection and home. \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Heidi Beierle \nHeidi Beierle is an artist and creepy-crawly lover based in Bellingham\, Washington\, who writes about the sensory experience of being alive and enjoying detours to the underworld\, inner space\, and the cosmos. She grew up in Wyoming where the wind\, dryness\, and desolate landscape made an imprint on her. This punishing environment taught Heidi self-reliance\, the beautiful dimensions of solitude\, how to push through pain\, and that survival is best friends with adaptation and death. \nHeidi has earned three degrees\, two in English and one in Community and Regional Planning. Her writing about her cross-country bicycle ride has been published in National Geographic Traveler\, High Desert Journal\, VoiceCatcher Journal\, and Journal of America’s Byways. \nLearn more at Heidibeierle.com \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Queer & Trans Life: Writing Today & Feeling Singular
DESCRIPTION:Join Ben Bascom and four writers on September 27th at 5pm for the launch of ‘Feeling Singular’ and a discussion of queer life today.\n\n\nJoin Ben Bascom\, Imani Jones\, Jay Kibble\, Victoria Logan\, & Scoot Swain for the launch of Ben’s new book\, Feeling Singular: Queer Masculinities in the Early United States\, and a discussion on modern queer experiences. \nBen will open the event with a brief discussion on the history of queerness and transness. Then Imani Jones\, Jay Kibble\, Victoria Logan\, & Scoot Swain will each share their philosophies\, theories\, and experiences of queerness along with a brief reading of their works. \nPlease note that we have capacity for 50 seated guests and 30 standing guests. Seats are first come\, first serve\, with some reserved seating for guests who need seats for accessibility. \n\n\n\nFeeling Singular: Queer Masculinities in the Early United States \nMuch of U.S. cultural production since the twentieth century has celebrated the figure of the singular individual\, from the lonesome Huckleberry Finn to the cinematic loners John Wayne and Clint Eastwood\, but that tradition casts a backward shadow that prohibits seeing how the singular in America was previously marked as unwanted\, outcast\, excessive\, or weird. Feeling Singular: Queer Masculinities in the Early United States examines the paradoxical nature of masculine self-promotion and individuality in the early United States. Through a collection of singular life narratives\, author Ben Bascom draws on a queer studies approach that uncovers how fraught private desires shaped public masculinity increasingly at odds with the disinterested norms of republican public \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Ben Bascom \nBen Bascom teaches early and nineteenth-century American literature and contemporary LGBTQ studies at Ball State University. His work draws upon a queer studies methodology that follows the relationship between power and desire\, gender and sexuality\, in American literary cultures. His recently published book\, Feeling Singular: Queer Masculinities in the Early United States—available through Oxford University Press—examines the histories of exclusion that have produced the norms that today consolidate around white\, straight\, and cisgender male identities. He is currently working on a project that examines the intersection of sexuality and mental health in nineteenth-century American literature.  \n\n\n\nMeet the Panelists: Imani Jones \nImani Jones (they/them/theirs) is a 25-year-old neurodivergent\, nonbinary\, artist\, community builder\, friend\, fashion enthusiast\, model\, and lesbian. They received a BS in Psychology from Ball State University and continue to exude a deep passion for community\, poetry and speech communication\, liberation\, and cultural analysis. Imani’s artistry is rooted in a close connection to their identity\, emotions and the continuous pondering of how expression allows them to navigate the world. Imani’s life’s art is to be a living\, flawed\, open\, and honest example of what it means to be yourself\, to build community out of a relational deficit\, and to thrive within a system that is made to harm you and divert hope. Imani hopes to expand their art and use their voice as a way of living so as to better serve their community\, and to use their time and energy sharing with people. Through their words and writing\, Imani shows people how to release themselves from the mental and emotional strongholds that our systems have created.  \n\n\n\nMeet the Panelists: Jay Kibble  \nJay Kibble (he/they) is an emerging writer living in Richmond\, IN. He received his Master’s in English from Ball State University where he happily began and continues to work with River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative. His journalism has appeared in Chatter and Get Out Chattanooga magazines\, while his creative nonfiction is forthcoming in The Broken Plate and Rural Education and Queer Identities: Rural and (Out)rooted\, an anthology spearheaded by Virginia Tech’s Center for Rural Education (forthcoming with Rutledge in 2025). When not performing marketing wizardry for Earlham College\, Jay works on the leadership and PR/Media teams for Muncie Queer Alliance\, a local nonprofit looking to increase inclusivity and connection within the Muncie queer community. A lot of what Jay will read tonight is from his memoir in progress\, tentatively titled “Chaos Orbiting Chaos.” His poetry is swirling around in his head and should land on the page shortly.  He’d like to thank BSU faculty\, UTC faculty\, Midwest Writers Workshop\, family and friends\, and his boyfriend for helping him develop the confidence to get to where he is today. Also\, coffee.  Huge shout-out to coffee.  \n\n\n\nMeet the Panelists: Victoria Logan  \nVictoria is an Indianapolis native\, and she attended Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities. It was in high school where she found her love of news and writing. Victoria continued her education and ultimately obtained her bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in English from Ball State University. During her time in the MA program\, she explored various aspects of her life\, including her struggles with having an autoimmune disease and various pieces of her identity. Her final creative project used the topic of love as a vehicle to showcase her experiences\, desires\, and woes with the subject. She gravitated to writing poetry at the end of it all but remains open to other genres as the wind sends them. In future works\, she looks to explore the layers of abandonment and healing through writing. Victoria is a lover of the arts of all forms\, nature\, hugging trees\, cartoons\, working out\, staring at the sun\, and has an unconditional and at times uncontrollable love of ramen.   \n\n\n\nMeet the Panelists: Scoot Swain  \nScoot Swain is a poet and artist from Columbia City\, Indiana. Coming from a small town\, she wanted to be Spider-Man when she grew up\, but eventually learned she couldn’t abide a career in law enforcement. She has a B.A. in Creative Writing from Ball State and an M.F.A. in Poetry from Butler. She was poetry editor at Turnpike Magazine and has read for Booth: a Journal. Her work smashes together multiple forms\, namely comics and poetry. Common themes include gender\, religion\, roadkill\, and small things found twiddling their thumbs where they don’t belong. Currently\, she’s working on a collection of work about God (capital G)\, the worst friend a gal can have. Her work can be found at the Indianapolis Review and Peach Magazine. You can follow her on Instagram at @scootswainpoet or you can ask for her email after the reading.   \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Author Reading: Karol Lagodzki
DESCRIPTION:Join Karol Lagodzki on September 28th at 2pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of their book\, ‘Controlled Conversations’!\n\n\nJoin Karol Lagodzki on September 28th at Indy Reads from 2-4pm for a reading\, discussion\, and signing of his book: Controlled Conversations. \nThere will be a reading\, discussion\, Q&A session\, and signing to follow. \nThis event is recommended for all ages. \nAll proceeds from book sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming. \n\n\n\nControlled Conversations \nIn 1982 Soviet-controlled Poland—a time and place of suspicion and mistrust—when geopolitical forces and violent men descend upon her little town of Zygmuntowo\, Emilia must decide if she’s willing to risk prison or worse for self-respect and for her unexpected lover.   \nOrdered to monitor the calls she connects\, Emilia\, a telephone switchboard operator\, overhears a mysterious coded conversation. It continues to distract her\, but not as much as the growing realization that she’s falling in unsanctioned love with her best friend Kalina. Meanwhile\, outside the city of Frombork\, Antek\, a shipyard engineer and a Solidarity labor union treasurer\, escapes from prison and works to recover the union’s money\, a task which in time leads him to Emilia’s town. In the metropolitan city of Gdańsk\, Roman\, a secret police major\, wants the money for himself and dreams of his own escape and the magical beaches of Rio de Janeiro.   \nThe only daughter of a local Communist Party apparatchik\, Emilia has enjoyed a sheltered life\, but with the advent of martial law\, her mother’s influence can no longer shield her. She faces choices she never expected to make when she discovers her best friend’s and lover’s involvement with the resistance. With new allies and enemies in town\, the time to choose a side is now.  \nIn his debut novel\, Karol Lagodzki asks: What separates people who transcend their fear and take risks for the sake of change from the rest of us? The answer is up to the readers.  \n\n\n\nMeet the Author: Karol Lagodzki \nKarol Lagodzki\, a native of Poland\, is an exophonic\, English-language author of fiction. His stories have appeared in Invisible City\, Storm Cellar\, NUNUM\, Streetlight Magazine\, and elsewhere\, and he has won Panel Magazine’s Ruritania Prize for Short Fiction. Controlled Conversations is his debut novel.  \nHe holds an MFA in creative writing\, buys more books than he can read or afford—usually novels and short story collections\, though he’s been known to pick up an odd book of poetry or accessible science—and gives back to the literary community by serving as a reader for several journals. Karol’s non-writing careers have ranged from fixing stucco while dangling from roofs in Paris to sorting through human cadaver heads in Florida to developing and marketing medical devices for critically ill people in the American Midwest\, but his true ambition is to remain a student for as long as he possibly can and make sure more stories make it out onto the page.  \nKarol lives halfway down a Southern Indiana ravine with his wonderful\, unconventional family\, a scurry of squirrels\, a passel of possums\, a gaze of raccoons\, a descent of woodpeckers\, and a large dog.  \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For October\, we’ll read When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nWhen We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo \n\n\n\nA mythic love story set in Trinidad\, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo’s radiant debut is a masterwork of lush imagination and exuberant storytelling–a spellbinding and hopeful novel about inheritance\, loss\, and love’s seismic power to heal. \n\n\n\nIn the old house on a hill\, where the city meets the rainforest\, Yejide’s mother is dying. She is leaving behind a legacy that now passes to Yejide: one St Bernard woman in every generation has the power to shepherd the city’s souls into the afterlife. But after years of suffering her mother’s neglect and bitterness\, Yejide is looking for a way out. \n\n\n\nRaised in the countryside by a devout Rastafarian mother\, Darwin has always abided by the religious commandment not to interact with death. He has never been to a funeral\, much less seen a dead body. But when the only job he can find is grave digging\, he must betray the life his mother built for him in order to provide for them both. Newly shorn of his dreadlocks and his past\, and determined to prove himself\, Darwin finds himself adrift in a city electric with possibility and danger. \n\n\n\nYejide and Darwin will meet inside the gates of Fidelis\, an ancient and sprawling cemetery\, where the dead lie uneasy in their graves and a reckoning with fate beckons them both.

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Curtis L. Crisler\, Bree Jo'ann Flannelly\, & Liz Whiteacre
DESCRIPTION:Join Curtis L. Crisler\, Bree Jo’ann Flannelly\, & Liz Whiteacre at Indy Reads on October 6th at 2pm for a poetry reading.Join Curtis L. Crisler\, Bree Jo’ann Flannelly\, & Liz Whiteacre at Indy Reads on October 6th from 2-4pm for a celebration of poetry! These three poets will collaborate\, creating an atmosphere of artistic excitement\, all three sharing the mic\, and taking turns reading a poem inspired by the last. The poets feed off each other\, not knowing what to read until that very moment. Poets will be given a 10-minute solo set to share their work. There will be a discussion to follow. Meet the Poets Curtis L. Crisler Curtis L. Crisler was born and raised in Gary\, Indiana. Crisler\, an award-winning poet/author\, has a new book called Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest. He has six poetry books\, two YA books\, and five poetry chapbooks. He’s been published in a variety of magazines\, journals\, and anthologies. He’s co-editor of poetry for the Museum of Americana. He created the Indiana Chitlin Circuit and the poetry form called the sonastic. He’s the Indiana Poet Laureate and Professor of English at Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW). He can be contacted at www.poetcrisler.com. Curtis L. Crisler’s Doing Drive-bys on How to Find Love in the Midwest Curtis L. Crisler’s Doing Drive-bys on How to Find Love in the Midwest is a lyrical poetic topography embodying his “urban Midwestern sensibility” (uMs). Through his uMs lens\, his poems transfigure and chronicle the humanity of the past\, present\, and future of Black Midwesterners (and all globe-stompers)— transforming our dead and living into one sacrosanct body that traverses this earth with our surreal and haggard breaths. Praise for Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest “…Whitman affected me this way\, and Dickinson did\, and so did T.S. Eliot…I want to make his wild one-of-a-kind poetic voice my own\, and I want to write about what he writes about\, the world that needs to be written about\, the world ignored by too many people\, the world of brutality against the good people deprived of justice and love.” —John Guzlowski\, author of Echoes of Tattered Tongues “Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest is about loving\, losing\, and honoring the moments of life we do have…his perspective on this life\, now\, in this place\, holds us accountable to find all the “beautiful things” that will break our hearts.” —Sarah Sandman\, author of The Sinew of 47 Years and I Speak Moan “…this man’s poems are liable to jump right up off the page and dance\, so infused are they with righteous rhythms. But the moves aren’t just for show. Crisler is after the heart and the hurt inside the contemporary experience.” —Justin Hamm\, author of Drinking Guinness With the Dead “All the feels I’ve ever felt about what it means to live and love and lay claim to the Midwest are expressed in Crisler’s poetry. This is what it is to be seen. Doing Drive-bys on How to Love in the Midwest…is a message\, a critical intervention\, a rapturous ode to a way of being.” —Terrion L. Have questions about getting published and want first-hand accounts of the industry? This event is just for you! \nJoin Indy Reads and a panel of four authors\, Wes Blake\, Robin Lee Lovelace\, and Brian Muriel\, from the University of Indianapolis’s Etchings Press as they share and discuss their publication journeys on October 6th at 5pm. \n\n\nMeet the Panelists \n\n\n\nWes Blake \nWes Blake’s fiction and essays have appeared in Louisiana Literature Journal\, Blood & Bourbon\, Book of Matches\, Jelly Bucket\, White Wall Review\, and elsewhere. His novella\, Pineville Trace\, won the Etchings Press Book Prize at the University of Indianapolis. Lee Martin\, author of the Pulitzer Prize Finalist\, The Bright Forever\, described him as “a writer to watch.” His novel\, Antenna\, was a semifinalist for the UNO Press Lab Prize. He holds an MFA from the Bluegrass Writers Studio. He lives in Kentucky. \n\n\n\nPineville Trace \nAfter being sentenced to a minimum-security prison in eastern Kentucky\, former southern revival preacher and confidence man\, Frank Russet\, escapes. Taking only a cat named Buffalo and a desire to outrun his former life\, he journeys to the fringes of society. As he struggles to survive\, Frank confronts his past\, seeking redemption amidst the wilderness. As Frank traverses the shadowy edges of society\, he encounters remnants of his former self\, forcing him to confront his deepest regrets and desires. In Pineville Trace\, Blake’s haunting prose captures the essence of a man on the brink of transformation\, urging readers to ponder the thin line between redemption and damnation. \n\n\n\nRobin Lee Lovelace \nRobin Lee Lovelace is a mixed-race African-American writer who usually writes short fiction. In 2019\, she won the Etchings Press annual competition for her novella Savonne\, Not Vonny. She was named as an honoree in the Emerging Author category for the 2020 Indiana Author’s Awards. In 2021\, she was one of the three finalists for the Don Belton Fiction Prize for her collection of stories A Wild Region\, a Stowe Story Labs SAG Indie Finalist for Savonne\, Not Vonny\, and the winner of the Marguerite McGlinn short fiction prize for her story “Uncle\,” awarded by Rosemont College and Philadelphia Stories. Her nonfiction essay “Different Times\, Different Degrees\, Same Shit” appeared in the 2023 summer edition of the Indiana Review. Robin’s latest book is a collection of short stories titled A Wild Region. In 2024\, Robin was named one of ten finalists for the ScreenCraft Cinematic Book Competition for Savonne\, Not Vonny. \n\n\n\nSavonne\, Not Vonny \nFrom her Indianapolis home\, upstairs from the whorehouse where her mother works\, young Savonne is taken deep into the bayous of New Orleans.
