SUMMARY:Community Study Session with Dave Reddick
DESCRIPTION:Join Dave Reddick for an interactive presentation about Indiana’s state flag coinciding with the state’s 208th anniversary!\n\n\nAre you curious about who really designed the Indiana state flag? \nOn Friday\, December 13 at 5:30pm\, join local author and historian Dave Reddick for a community study session all about the history of Indiana’s state flag! \nThe evening includes remarks from Indy Reads CEO Ruba Marshood highlighting the significance of flags and cultural differences\, and a craft station for participants of all ages to create their own flags. \nThis event is open to participants of all ages. \nProceeds from sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming for more than 400 adult learners each year. \n\n\n\nThe Indiana Flag: Who Really Designed It? \nDave Reddick’s The Indiana Flag: Who Really Designed It? chronicles the efforts by our state’s chapter of a national organizing group to push Indiana lawmakers to adopt a unique and official state flag. \n\n\n\nDavid B. Reddick holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Michigan State University where he taught journalism courses as well as at Western Michigan and Butler Universities. He spent 24 years in the insurance industry as a regulator\, a health company lobbyist and a research analyst for a property/casualty trade association. In addition to his book on the Indiana state flag\, Reddick has published 15 short stories in several mystery anthologies. He and his wife live in Camby\, Indiana. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. Indy Reads values our community and facilitators. We are proud to provide programming to all. Thank you for being a part of our community! \n$10 – This donation covers the cost of one attendee to this event. Indy Reads strives to bring the very best programming to Fountain Square and all Hoosiers. Thank you for helping us to keep our quality programs accessible for all! \n$20 – This donation covers the cost of two attendees to this event. It is only through the generosity of our community that we are able to support programs that enrich the lives of all Hoosiers. Thank you for your support! \nOther – “Pay-What-You-Can” really does mean pay what you can. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For January\, we’ll read River Mumma by Zalika Reid-Benta! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nRiver Mumma by Zalika Reid-Benta \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\n“River Mumma is a love letter to culture\, home\, and coming of age–and will spark important\, relevant book club conversations\, too.” –Marissa Stapley\, New York Times bestselling author of Lucky \n\n\n\nIssa Rae’s Insecure with a magical realist spin: River Mumma is an exhilarating contemporary fantasy novel about a young Black woman who navigates her quarter-life-crisis while embarking on a mythical quest through the streets of Toronto. \n\n\n\nAlicia has been out of grad school for months. She has no career prospects and lives with her mom\, who won’t stop texting her macabre news stories and reminders to pick up items from the grocery store. \n\n\n\nThen\, one evening\, the Jamaican water deity\, River Mumma\, appears to Alicia\, telling her that she has twenty-four hours to scour the city for her missing comb.Alicia doesn’t understand why River Mumma would choose her. She can’t remember all the legends her relatives told her\, unlike her retail co-worker Heaven\, who can reel off Jamaican folklore by heart. She doesn’t know if her childhood visions have returned\, or why she feels a strange connection to her other co-worker Mars. But when the trio are chased down by malevolent spirits called duppies\, they realize their tenuous bonds to each other may be their only lifelines. With the clock ticking\, Alicia’s quest through the city broadens into a journey through time–to find herself and what the river carries. \n\n\n\nEnergetic and invigorating\, River Mumma is a vibrant exploration of diasporic community and ancestral ties\, and a homage to Jamaican storytelling by one of the most invigorating voices in today’s literature. \n\n\n\n“This quirky\, fizzy\, charming debut surprises and amuses. Reid-Benta writes beautifully\, drawing on Caribbean mythologies to create a fast paced and entertaining tale. It’s rare to find a novel written with such humour and heart.” –T. L. Huchu\, USA Today Bestselling author of The Library of the Dead
