Even if you don’t write\, give us a whirl (as long as you provide us with homemade cookies and lemonade). \nWe accept people at all skill levels\, from the doe-eyed novice to the experts. \nIf you want to write or improve your writing\, then you’ve come to the right place! \nWe critique all manner of writing\, be it fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry\, travelogues\, technical manuals … if it has words\, we’ll read it. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Indy Reads strives to bring the very best programming to Fountain Square and all Hoosiers. Thank you for helping us to keep our quality programs accessible for all! \n$20 – This donation covers the cost of two attendees to this event. If you are attending as an individual\, your ticket at this level makes it possible for another who cannot afford a ticket to attend. It is only through the generosity of our community that we are able to support programs that enrich the lives of all Hoosiers. Thank you for your support! \nOther – “Pay-What-You-Can” really does mean pay what you can. Indy Reads appreciates that every one of our community members is able to support our vision of 100% literacy for all in different ways. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For January\, we’ll read River Mumma by Zalika Reid-Benta! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nRiver Mumma by Zalika Reid-Benta \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\n“River Mumma is a love letter to culture\, home\, and coming of age–and will spark important\, relevant book club conversations\, too.” –Marissa Stapley\, New York Times bestselling author of Lucky \n\n\n\nIssa Rae’s Insecure with a magical realist spin: River Mumma is an exhilarating contemporary fantasy novel about a young Black woman who navigates her quarter-life-crisis while embarking on a mythical quest through the streets of Toronto. \n\n\n\nAlicia has been out of grad school for months. She has no career prospects and lives with her mom\, who won’t stop texting her macabre news stories and reminders to pick up items from the grocery store. \n\n\n\nThen\, one evening\, the Jamaican water deity\, River Mumma\, appears to Alicia\, telling her that she has twenty-four hours to scour the city for her missing comb.Alicia doesn’t understand why River Mumma would choose her. She can’t remember all the legends her relatives told her\, unlike her retail co-worker Heaven\, who can reel off Jamaican folklore by heart. She doesn’t know if her childhood visions have returned\, or why she feels a strange connection to her other co-worker Mars. But when the trio are chased down by malevolent spirits called duppies\, they realize their tenuous bonds to each other may be their only lifelines. With the clock ticking\, Alicia’s quest through the city broadens into a journey through time–to find herself and what the river carries. \n\n\n\nEnergetic and invigorating\, River Mumma is a vibrant exploration of diasporic community and ancestral ties\, and a homage to Jamaican storytelling by one of the most invigorating voices in today’s literature. \n\n\n\n“This quirky\, fizzy\, charming debut surprises and amuses. Reid-Benta writes beautifully\, drawing on Caribbean mythologies to create a fast paced and entertaining tale. It’s rare to find a novel written with such humour and heart.” –T. L. Huchu\, USA Today Bestselling author of The Library of the Dead

SUMMARY:Author Reading: Nico Lang
DESCRIPTION:Join visiting author and award-winning journalist Nico Lang at Indy Reads for a reading of American Teenager: How Trans Kids are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era. \n\n\n\nThis event is open to participants of all ages. \n\n\n\nProceeds from sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming for more than 400 adult learners each year. \n\n\n\nAmerican Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era \n\n\n\nMedia coverage tends to sensationalize the fight over how trans kids should be allowed to live\, but what is incredibly rare are the voices of the people at the heart of this debate: transgender and gender nonconforming kids themselves. For their groundbreaking new book\, journalist Nico Lang spent a year traveling the country to document the lives of transgender\, nonbinary\, and genderfluid teens and their families. Drawing on hundreds of hours of on-the-ground interviews with them and the people in their communities\, American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era paints a vivid portrait of what it’s actually like to grow up trans today. \n\n\n\nFrom the tip of Florida’s conservative panhandle to vibrant queer communities in California\, and from Texas churches to mosques in Illinois\, American Teenager gives readers a window into the lives of Wyatt\, Rhydian\, Mykah\, Clint\, Ruby\, Augie\, Jack\, and Kylie\, eight teens who\, despite what some lawmakers might want us to believe\, are truly just kids looking for a brighter future. \n\n\n\nNico Lang (they/them) is a nonbinary award-winning journalist with over a decade of experience covering the transgender community’s fight for equality. Their work has appeared in major publications\, including Rolling Stone\, Esquire\, The New York Times\, Vox\, The Wall Street Journal\, Salon\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Time\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times. Lang is the creator of Queer News Daily and previously served as the deputy editor for Out magazine\, the news editor for Them\, the LGBTQ+ correspondent for VICE\, and the editor and cofounder of the literary journal In Our Words. Their industry-leading contributions to queer media have resulted in a GLAAD Media Award\, 10 awards from the National Association of LGBTQ Journalists (NLGJA)\, and three awards from the Los Angeles Press Club\, including the 2023 Online Journalist of the Year. Lang is also the first-ever recipient of the Visibility Award from the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF)\, an honor created to recognize their impactful contributions to reporting on the lives of LGBTQ+ people.

SUMMARY:Author Reading: Marc Leeds
DESCRIPTION:Join visiting author and Vonnegut Scholar Marc Leeds for a reading and signing of his funny and family friendly book “The Doody Story”!\n\n\nJoin visiting author and Vonnegut Scholar Marc Leeds for a reading and signing of his newest book\, The Doody Story or Potty Ecology\, a funny story for the entire family. \nThis event is for audiences of all ages. \nProceeds from sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming for 400 adult learners each year. \n\n\n\nVonnegut Scholar\, PhD and all around master of literary analysis\, Marc Leeds\, had stepped away from his critique space to pen a charming book for children that explains the “ins” and “outs” of kids most fascinating topic – doody! \nLeeds first came up with this fact filled tale when answering questions put to him by his own daughters. The Doody Book or Potty Ecology will answer your child’s questions\, too. \nCleverly illustrated by Marc’s sister-in-law\, Eileen\, this book is one that every young person should have in America’s most common reading room. \nThe publisher is Charles Bruce Foundation at charlesbrucefoundation.com. \n\n\n\nAuthor and educator Marc Leeds\, is founder of the Kurt Vonnegut Society and a founding board member of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library. \nStarting with his newest book\, The Doody Story\, Marc Leeds turned to writing children’s stories that explore some of society’s imponderable questions and perceptions. And\, as a fan of the remarkably practical\, it’s about time. \nMarc’s renewed passion for telling simple stories comes after a long and successful career using the writing process to teach subversively\, moving eager learners from rote assignment completion to rigorously considered\, thoughtful pieces. (Oh\, the days of critical thinking!) \nWhile teaching and directing university writing programs was his day job\, Leeds spent more than thirty-years toiling at night on his magnum opus\, The Vonnegut Encyclopedia. Because he toiled tirelessly on this remarkable tome\, he considers himself a modern day twelfth-century scholar. \nOne of Marc’s favorite pastimes is returning to Indianapolis\, the birthplace of his dear friend and muse\, Kurt Vonnegut\, Jr. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. DESCRIPTION:For February\, we’ll read The Skin and Its Girl by Sarah Cypher! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nThe Skin and Its Girl by Sarah Cypher \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\nA young\, queer Palestinian American woman pieces together her great-aunt’s secrets in this “enchanting\, memorable” (Bustle) debut\, confronting questions of sexual identity\, exile\, and lineage.” \n\n\n\nAs beautifully detailed as a piece of Palestinian embroidery\, this bold\, vivid novel will speak to readers across genders\, cultures\, and identities.”–Diana Abu-Jaber\, author of Fencing with the King \n\n\n\nA THEM BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR – SHORTLISTED FOR THE URSULA K. LE GUIN PRIZE FOR FICTION – LONG-LISTED FOR THE PEN/HEMINGWAY AWARD \n\n\n\nIn a Pacific Northwest hospital far from the Rummani family’s ancestral home in Palestine\, the heart of a stillborn baby begins to beat and her skin turns vibrantly\, permanently cobalt blue. On the same day\, the Rummanis’ centuries-old soap factory in Nablus is destroyed in an air strike. The family matriarch and keeper of their lore\, Aunt Nuha\, believes that the blue girl embodies their sacred history\, harkening back to a time when the Rummanis were among the wealthiest soap-makers and their blue soap was a symbol of a legendary love. \n\n\n\nDecades later\, Betty returns to Aunt Nuha’s gravestone\, faced with a difficult decision: Should she stay in the only country she’s ever known\, or should she follow her heart and the woman she loves\, perpetuating her family’s cycle of exile? Betty finds her answer in partially translated notebooks that reveal her aunt’s complex life and struggle with her own sexuality\, which Nuha hid to help the family immigrate to the United States. But\, as Betty soon discovers\, her aunt hid much more than that. \n\n\n\nThe Skin and Its Girl is a searing\, poetic tale about desire and identity\, and a provocative exploration of how we let stories divide\, unite\, and define us–and wield even the power to restore a broken family. Sarah Cypher is that rare debut novelist who writes with the mastery and flair of a seasoned storyteller.
