Every Thursday evening in April\, join Indy Reads and special guest local poets for an hour of freewriting poetry. We’ll provide activities\, prompts\, and creative space to write with other writers. Bring your laptop\, notebook\, or just yourself and join the fun! \nJoin for any or all of the following dates: \nThursday\, April 3 at 6pm with elle roberts \nelle roberts (all pronouns) is a facilitator\, artist\, and writer with a “sharp oyster knife” in the words of Zora Neale Hurston. Imani’s artistry is rooted in a close connection to their identity\, emotions and the continuous pondering of how expression allows them to navigate the world. Imani’s life’s art is to be a living\, flawed\, open\, and honest example of what it means to be yourself\, to build community out of a relational deficit\, and to thrive within a system that is made to harm you and divert hope. Through their words and writing\, Imani shows people how to release themselves from the mental and emotional strongholds that our systems have created. \nThursday\, April 17 at 6pm with Scoot Swain \nScoot Swain is a poet and illustrator living in Indianapolis. She recently graduated from Butler University with her MFA in poetry\, and she serves as the social media editor for Booth. She has published work with fellow poet Abby Johnson at the Indianapolis Review and is currently working on a manuscript of poetry comics. She’s performed her work across the Midwest\, the East Coast\, Scandinavia\, World Pride\, EuroGames\, the United Nations\, the United States Capitol\, and the Danish Parliament. She has three self-published works of poetry titled\, DIVINE (2018)\, Twirl: A Collection of Poetry by a Queer and Transgender Hoosier (2021)\, and VIGIL (2023). Sylvia is an Artist and Public Life Resident with Big Car Collaborative in Garfield Park. \n \nThese events are recommended for participants age 16 and up. \nAt the end of the month\, you’re welcome to share your freewrite creations at Indy Reads Lit Stage open mic on Wednesday\, April 30 at 6pm. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Meg Hamand and Claire Isenthal
DESCRIPTION:Join local authors Meg Hamand and Claire Isenthal for a fireside chat about their writing journeys\, readings from their novels\, and a Q&A!\n\n\n\nDiamonds in Auschwitz \nA poignant novel of love\, survival\, and how brightly hope can shine against the backdrop of unimaginable darkness \nRachael is a resilient Jewish woman imprisoned in Auschwitz during World War II\, clinging to the memories of her lost family while enduring the harrowing reality of the concentration camp. Amidst the brutality\, she uncovers a hidden diamond engagement ring in the mud—its brilliance offering a glimmer of hope and a reason to survive. As she navigates the perils of camp life\, Rachael forms a profound bond with Chaya\, a young girl also yearning for connection and comfort in their shared despair. \nInterwoven with Rachael’s tale are the lives of Samual and Hanna\, a young Jewish couple planning for their future while navigating the hardships of Nazi-occupied Prague. Distracted by his life in Prague\, Samual initially dismisses the growing threats against their community\, focusing instead on the engagement ring he dreams of giving to Hanna. As the grip of the Nazis tightens\, their plans unravel\, yet their love becomes a beacon of resilience amid escalating fear and loss. \nDiamonds in Auschwitz illustrates how\, when everything seems lost\, even the smallest treasures can illuminate the path to freedom and connection. Through Rachael and Chaya’s friendship\, and Samual and Hanna’s unwavering love\, the story reminds us that even in the bleakest times\, the best aspects of humanity can shine brightly. \n\n\n\nMeg Hamand is the author of the newly released\, Diamonds in Auschwitz. She has written professionally for The Plymouth Pilot News\, The Effingham Daily News\, Michiana Executive Journal\, and 13th Hour Magazine. She’s had short stories appear in Hoosier Writers\, Indiana English and Internationally Yours: Prize-Winning Stories. \nMeg is a debut author of historical fiction. She holds an undergraduate degree from Indiana State University in English and Creative Writing. She has master’s degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. \nShe lives in northern Indiana with her family (husband and daughter) and their miniature dachshund Mr. Darcy (named after Pride and Prejudice\, not Bridget Jones’s Diary\, she is quick to point out). \n\n\n\nThe Rising Order \nFlynn faces an impossible choice―save her family and friends or save the lives of thousands of innocent people. \nFlynn Zarytsky\, recruiter for the Chicago mega-tech company Magnetic\, comes face-to-face with true terror amid a horrific mass shooting by homegrown terrorist organization REDS. Wolf\, a REDS soldier\, has her in his sights\, then decides to spare her life. But in doing so\, he may have ensnared her in a fate worse than death. \nREDS’ master plan is to make society pay for its greed and to establish a new order. Wolf sees manipulating Flynn in her role at Magnetic as the perfect way to infiltrate the tech company and use its reach to unleash catastrophic devastation on the city of Chicago and topple civilization. He never expected Flynn could chip away at his resolve and question REDS’ mission. And she never dreamed she’d be a pawn in a dangerous game that forces her to leave the citizens of Chicago vulnerable to slaughter so that her loved ones can live. \n\n\n\nClaire Isenthal grew up traveling all over the world with her family. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Purdue University and went on to live in Chicago where she worked in Digital Marketing and Ad Sales for over ten years. She has since relocated her family back to her Indiana hometown\, but is still an avid traveler and loves nothing more than to lose herself in a good book. She attributes her knack for structure and pacing to reading some of the Harry Potter books over 10 times. Claire is an International Thriller Writers (ITW) member and publishes a monthly Substack for new authors — Rising Talent\, Earning Your Space in the Publishing Industry. When Claire is not attending writer’s conferences or classes\, her evenings are spent with her husband\, two children\, computer or writers group. The Rising Order is her first novel and was an almost instant Amazon bestseller. She recently completed the second installment to the series\, The New Order. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Author Reading: Cozette Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Cozette Zimmerman on May 10 at Indy Reads for a reading of her debut book A Call Girl With Her Clothes On!\n\n\nJoin local author Cozette Zimmerman at Indy Reads for a reading of her debut book A Call Girl With Her Clothes On\, a collection of tender and funny stories about her time as a hospital phone operator. \n\n\n\nA Call Girl With Her Clothes On \nWhat happens when a college student finds herself in need of some extra cash\, and she only has time to work at night? Starting in 2019\, author Cozette Zimmerman took a fairly generic part-time job working nights as a hospital phone operator while working full-time on her college degree. \nIn that job\, she soon discovered that sometimes\, at three o’clock in the morning\, people really just need a better adult to tell them what to do—and her role was to be that better adult. For the first eight months\, the calls were fairly regular and routine—well\, as routine as a medical emergency in the middle of the night can be. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and changed everything. \nA Call Girl with Her Clothes On shares hilarious true accounts of working with patients during medical emergencies before and in the midst of a global pandemic. These short stories recall conversations and events that have stayed with Zimmerman\, leaving her to wonder about the fate of the world. \n\n\n\nCozette Zimmerman is currently a crime scene investigator\, topping her previous forays into engineering and the medical world. Her many passions include forensics\, writing\, crochet\, napping\, and spoiling her cats. Her debut book throws a humorous spotlight on an overlooked part of the medical world. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For May\, we’ll read The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\nThe Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy\n\n\n\nIn the gripping first novel in the Daughters of the Empty Throne trilogy\, author Margaret Killjoy spins a tale of earth magic\, power struggle\, and self-invention in an own-voices story of trans witchcraft. \n\n\n\nLorel has always dreamed of becoming a witch: learning magic\, fighting monsters\, and exploring the world beyond the small town where she and her mother run the stables. Even though a strange plague is killing the trees in the Kingdom of Cekon and witches are being blamed for it\, Lorel wants nothing more than to join them. There’s only one problem: all witches are women\, and she was born a boy. \n\n\n\nWhen the coven comes to claim her best friend\, Lorel disguises herself in a dress and joins in her friend’s place\, leaving home and her old self behind. She soon discovers the dark powers threatening the kingdom: a magical blight scars the land\, and the power-mad Duchess Helte is crushing everything between her and the crown. In spite of these dangers\, Lorel makes friends and begins learning magic from the powerful witches in her coven. However\, she fears that her new friends and mentors will find out her secret and kick her out of the coven\, or worse.
