SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For March\, we’ll read Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jess Q. Sutanto! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nVera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jess Q. Sutanto \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\nA USA Today bestsellerEdgar Award Winner for Best Original PaperbackAudie Award Winner for MysteryLibby Award Winner for Best Mystery \n\n\n\nA lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto\, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties. \n\n\n\nVera Wong is a lonely little old lady–ah\, lady of a certain age–who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone\, Vera is not needy\, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. \n\n\n\nThen one morning\, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing–a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand\, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her\, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would\, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could\, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. \n\n\n\nWhat Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen\, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?

Imani’s artistry is rooted in a close connection to their identity\, emotions and the continuous pondering of how expression allows them to navigate the world. Imani’s life’s art is to be a living\, flawed\, open\, and honest example of what it means to be yourself\, to build community out of a relational deficit\, and to thrive within a system that is made to harm you and divert hope. Through their words and writing\, Imani shows people how to release themselves from the mental and emotional strongholds that our systems have created. \nThursday\, April 17 at 6pm with Scoot Swain \nScoot Swain is a poet and illustrator living in Indianapolis. She recently graduated from Butler University with her MFA in poetry\, and she serves as the social media editor for Booth. She’s performed her work across the Midwest\, the East Coast\, Scandinavia\, World Pride\, EuroGames\, the United Nations\, the United States Capitol\, and the Danish Parliament. She has three self-published works of poetry titled\, DIVINE (2018)\, Twirl: A Collection of Poetry by a Queer and Transgender Hoosier (2021)\, and VIGIL (2023). We share. We live. \nPen to Paper is Indy’s most notorious coterie of misfit writers. \n\n\nWhat We Do \nIn its simplest form\, we write stuff\, share it with each other\, and talk about it. \nWe critique each other’s written material and provide creative support\, constructive criticism\, and sage advice. \n\n\nWho May Join \nIf you write\, you may join. Even if you don’t write\, give us a whirl (as long as you provide us with homemade cookies and lemonade). \nWe accept people at all skill levels\, from the doe-eyed novice to the experts. \nIf you want to write or improve your writing\, then you’ve come to the right place! \nWe critique all manner of writing\, be it fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry\, travelogues\, technical manuals … if it has words\, we’ll read it. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. SUMMARY:Freewrite Poetry Sessions with Indy Reads
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday evening in April\, join Indy Reads and special guest local poets for an hour of freewriting poetry!\n\n\nCelebrate National Poetry Month with Indy Reads! Every Thursday evening in April\, join Indy Reads and special guest local poets for an hour of freewriting poetry. We’ll provide activities\, prompts\, and creative space to write with other writers. Bring your laptop\, notebook\, or just yourself and join the fun! \nJoin for any or all of the following dates: \nThursday\, April 3 at 6pm with elle roberts \nelle roberts (all pronouns) is a facilitator\, artist\, and writer with a “sharp oyster knife” in the words of Zora Neale Hurston. When elle is not running community programs at Indy Reads\, they are almost always crying over their favorite poems by Black writers or attempting to write their own. \nThursday\, April 10 at 6pm with Imani Jones \nImani Jones (they/them/theirs) is a neurodivergent and nonbinary\, artist\, poet\, community builder\, model\, and lesbian. She has published work with fellow poet Abby Johnson at the Indianapolis Review and is currently working on a manuscript of poetry comics. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram @scootswain. \nThursday\, April 24 at 6pm with Sylvia Thomas \nSylvia Thomas is a poet and artist from Indianapolis\, Indiana. For the last ten years\, Sylvia has been sharing her poetry and music for the stage through her lens as a Queer\, Transgender\, and Intersex Hoosier (someone from Indiana\, USA). Sylvia is an Artist and Public Life Resident with Big Car Collaborative in Garfield Park. \n \nThese events are recommended for participants age 16 and up. \nAt the end of the month\, you’re welcome to share your freewrite creations at Indy Reads Lit Stage open mic on Wednesday\, April 30 at 6pm. \n\n\n\nThis event is Pay-What-You-Can. Here’s what your suggested donation can do for the Indy Reads community: \nFREE – This ticket is for attendees that would like to attend this event and are unable to purchase a ticket. SUMMARY:Riot Reads Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For April\, we’ll read Maame by Jessica George! To get to the room pass the checkout counter\, go down the hall\, and take a left. Masks welcome but not mandatory. \n\n\n\nBuy the book from Indy Reads! Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads keep our classrooms tuition-free for more than 400 adult students each year. \n\n\n\nMaame by Jessica George\n\n\n\n“Lively\, funny\, poignant . . . Prepare to fall in love with Maddie. I did!” —Bonnie Garmus\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry \n\n\n\nMaame (ma-meh) has many meanings in Twi but in my case\, it means woman. \n\n\n\nIt’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding. With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing)\, Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father\, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work\, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting. \n\n\n\nSo when her mum returns from her latest trip\, Maddie seizes the chance to move out of the family home and finally start living. A self-acknowledged late bloomer\, she’s ready to experience some important “firsts”: She finds a flat share\, says yes to after-work drinks\, pushes for more recognition in her career\, and throws herself into the bewildering world of internet dating. But when tragedy strikes\, Maddie is forced to face the true nature of her unconventional family\, and the perils—and rewards—of putting her heart on the line. \n\n\n\nSmart\, funny\, and affecting\, Jessica George’s Maame deals with the themes of our time with humor and poignancy: from familial duty and racism\, to female pleasure\, the complexity of love\, and the life-saving power of friendship. Most important\, it explores what it feels like to be torn between two homes and cultures―and it celebrates finally being able to find where you belong.
