Indy Reads Receives $12,000 Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Adult Literacy
Indianapolis, Indiana – May 19, 2017 – This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Indy Reads a $12,000 grant to support Adult literacy. This local grant award is part of more than $7.5 million in grants awarded to nearly 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves.
“Indy Reads is thrilled to be partnering again with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to provide free literacy and English language tutoring to adults in Central Indiana,” says Indy Reads CEO, Ryan King. “Dollar General’s support will be invaluable in launching our new Community Classrooms initiative.”
The Indy Reads Community Classrooms program will assist Central Indiana adults with limited literacy and English language skills. The program is designed as a transition course for adults who want to earn their High School Equivalency diploma or take part in job training classes, but whose literacy and English language skills first need improvement. King states, “This new initiative is a game changer. In the past, the only classroom option for adults with low literacy or limited English skills was a traditional Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency class. The Indy Reads Community Classrooms system will serve as a bridge to higher level programs, allowing students to progress at their own pace.”
“Dollar General is excited to provide these organizations with funding to support literacy and education throughout the 44 states we serve,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “Providing these grants and supporting the communities we call home reflects our mission of Serving Others and it’s rewarding to see the impact these funds have.”
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. About Indy Reads:
For over 30 years, Indy Reads has promoted literacy to families and adults in Central Indiana. We believe that the foundation for success is literacy. High literacy levels give access to better educational, career, and developmental opportunities, but statistics show that 1 in 6 Hoosier adults currently read at or below a fifth-grade level. Through our interactive Community Classroom model, we offer programs for adult learners to increase literacy and English language proficiency. Experienced instructors, skilled student navigators, and trained classroom volunteers support students in their efforts to achieve. Our vision to Make Indianapolis 100% Literate will give everyone the necessary skills for a greater quality of life.
