Indy Reads builds literacy, English language, and job readiness skills to empower adults and their families to reach their full potential
In pursuit of our vision of 100% literacy for all, Indy Reads’ staff and volunteers partner with our adult learners to help build the literacy and language skills they need to more fully participate in their community, support their children’s education, earn their HSE diplomas, enter job training programs, and obtain industry-recognized job certifications.
Our mission is supported by donations and purchases in our community bookstore.

Join Indy Reads for a cozy, all-languages, all-ages Crochet Circles hosted by Kayla B. on the 1st & 3rd Sundays* of the month!
This is a free event for all ages where crochet community can come together to meet, learn, and support eachother!
We will teach you how to crochet if you have never crocheted before.
If you have crocheted before, join us to crochet while making new friends!
Crochet hooks and yarn will be provided. Supplies may be limited.

Kayla B. is a graduate student at IU Indianapolis and has recently begun volunteering at Indy Reads. She has been crocheting for 5 years and can most frequently be found curled up with her cat and a good book.

Join Indy Reads on Sunday, November 1, 2026 from 1-3pm for a celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)!
Enjoy a special presentation from Indy Reads students Victor and Lacha, followed by face painting, flower headband crafting, and a community catrina walk. Celebrate with music, art, and plenty of community spirit!

Meet the Hosts!
Lacha
Hi, my name is Edelsys Lachataignerais Bonet, but everyone calls me Lacha. I am from Cuba. I am a biochemist. I have two children: Camilo and Elisa. My son, Camilo, is a dancer with Indianapolis Ballet and is currently enrolled in college studying Business Administration. My daughter, Elisa, was studying to be a civil engineer in Cuba.
We all went to Indy Reads for English classes and English practice during Conversation Circles in the bookstore. When I started classes at Indy Reads, I was working in a restaurant as a busser. After I graduated from Indy Reads last year, I applied for a job as a Greenhouse Manager with Flanner House. I was very nervous because of my English. Ruba and Daisy helped me practice for my interview. I got the job! My daughter also works as a Child Development Assistant at Flanner House.
We still practice English on Sundays in the bookstore. Indy Reads is like our family here.
Victor
Victor Granados began his English-learning journey with Indy Reads in the spring of 2023. Before moving from Mexico in 2022, Victor taught literature at various high schools before founding his own consulting agency. Victor is the proud father of a son who still lives in Mexico. When he's not in class, he can be found hosting Spanish Conversation Circles at Indy Reads on the second Sunday of each month.
