Help build our community ofrenda (alter)! Bring a photo or small memento of a loved one, pet, or someone you'd like to honor and remember during the celebration.
We look forward to learning and celebrating with you!
Meet the Hosts!
Lacha
Hi, my name is Edelsys Lachataignerais Bonet, but everyone calls me Lacha. I am from Cuba. I am a biochemist. I have two children: Camilo and Elisa.
My son, Camilo, is a dancer with Indianapolis Ballet and is currently enrolled in college studying Business Administration. My daughter, Elisa, was studying to be a civil engineer in Cuba.
We all went to Indy Reads for English classes and English practice during Conversation Circles in the bookstore. When I started classes at Indy Reads, I was working in a restaurant as a busser. After I graduated from Indy Reads last year, I applied for a job as a Greenhouse Manager with Flanner House. I was very nervous because of my English. Ruba and Daisy helped me practice for my interview. I got the job! My daughter also works as a Child Development Assistant at Flanner House.
We still practice English on Sundays in the bookstore. Indy Reads is like our family here.
Victor
Victor Granados began his English-learning journey with Indy Reads in the spring of 2023. Before moving from Mexico in 2022, Victor taught literature at various high schools before founding his own consulting agency. Victor is the proud father of a son who still lives in Mexico. When he's not in class, he can be found hosting Spanish Conversation Circles at Indy Reads on the second Sunday of each month.

The Event
Drag Story Hour uses the art of drag in children's story hours to spread literacy, love, and acceptance! Join our local storytellers, Prince Brentlee and Aqua Marie, as they capture the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and give kids a glamorous and positive role model. This is a family-friendly event, and all ages are welcome!
Prince Brentlee (he/they) is the drag pop sensation of Indianapolis that has more energy than a can of Red Bull spiked with a 5hr energy. They are always filled to brim with unicorn energy and enjoy spending each story hour with their little royal friends. Their favorite book as a kid was Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.
Aqua Marie
Hey my name is Aqua Marie. She/her are my pronouns in drag. I have been doing Drag since November 2023. I have helped with the Indy Drag Theater with a few productions. I have my B.S. in Early Childhood Administration, so I have a huge passion for reading stories with children. I love that I get to use this to bring two of my passions together and share that with others!

Join Indy Reads and Pen to Paper for this bimonthly writing workshop from 4:30-6:30pm on the first and third Saturdays of the month.
Pen to Paper is an inclusive writing group that meets at Indy Reads to read each other’s work, provide constructive feedback, and build community. You can drop-in to the workshop, but only work that has been emailed to the group a week in advance will be workshopped that night.
All genres of writing are welcome during this workshop.
Pen to Paper at Indy Reads is recommended for writers ages 18+.
Meet the Pen to Paper
We write. We share. We live.
Pen to Paper is Indy's most notorious coterie of misfit writers.
What We Do
In its simplest form, we write stuff, share it with each other, and talk about it.
We critique each other's written material and provide creative support, constructive criticism, and sage advice.
Who May Join
If you write, you may join. Even if you don't write, give us a whirl (as long as you provide us with homemade cookies and lemonade).
We accept people at all skill levels, from the doe-eyed novice to the experts.
If you want to write or improve your writing, then you've come to the right place!
We critique all manner of writing, be it fiction, non-fiction, poetry, travelogues, technical manuals ... if it has words, we'll read it.

The Indy Reads Book Club features a variety of authors and book genres and is open to the public. If you are a book lover looking for space to have some great conversations around some great books, or someone who is looking to expand their reading list, we want to chat with you!
Hosted by Gya Torres and Katherine Culp, our monthly book club is intended to be a fun, easy space to chat about what we love about our Book of the Month. Pick up a copy at Indy Reads for 15% off and then join us on the last Sunday of each month at 2pm to discuss! Join us for one discussion or all of them!
This monthly event is recommended for adults age 18+.
Proceeds from sales at Indy Reads support our English literacy programming for nearly 500 adult learners each year.

Katherine Culp
Katherine has been reader all her life! While she loves all genres, but fantasy, sci-fi, and cozy mysteries are her absolute favorite! Katherine has a personal goal to read 50 books each year. She was 4 short last year, so hopes to reach her goal this year--thank you book clubs! Her favorite way to read is by listening to audiobooks (yes that counts!).
Some of Katherine's favorite books are The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riodian, and the Legendborn series by Tracy Deon.
Gya Torres
Gya is a lover of all things Romance. Her favorite way to read is via audiobooks and will definitely have all kinds of trophy books to celebrate her favorite reads. She also loves to read about feminist movements, social justice, and memoirs. Gya loves to read multiple books at once, since she is a mood reader and needs to find the right book for the right moment.
Currently she is indulging in Katee Robert's latest novel, Tender Cruelty the 9th book in the Dark Olympus series. At the same time she is physically reading Mutual Aid by Dean Spade, and I, Medusa by Ayana Grey.

Join us for Indy Reads Lit Stage on the last Wednesday* of each month at 6pm (except when Indy Reads is closed for holidays).
*Please note, Indy Reads has rescheduled May's Lit Stage from May 27th to May 20th at 6pm.
The word Lit is short for literacy, the mission of Indy Reads! Lit is also a popular Black cultural word that means something is entertaining or exciting.
The Lit Stage open mic welcomes people of all ages, art forms, and languages to share your talents with our shared community. Open mic performances can include singing, monologues, skits, dancing, comedy, poetry and essay reading, and more!
Performers are welcome to use the stage area, podium, and microphone. We ask that performances keep to about 5 minutes. Participants can perform again if time allows.
Please note the Lit Stage open mic is family-friendly. Explicit language, gestures, and behaviors are not allowed. If you are including music in your performance, we require radio edits only.
