Indy Reads partners with Electric Plus to build English literacy skills in the workforce

INDIANAPOLIS, April 10, 2025 – Indy Reads, a nonprofit focused on adult English literacy in central Indiana, is excited to share the success of its pilot program with Electric Plus. Through this initiative, 25 employees have enhanced their skills with Indy Reads’ innovative curriculum. This 12-week pilot course offered more than 80 hours of instruction, including 45 in-person hours and an integrated online component. The pilot will celebrate its final class on April 11, 2025.

“We are thrilled to have partnered with Electric Plus to develop and deliver this course to build the English literacy and job-specific language skills of their talented team members,” Ruba Marshood, Indy Reads’ chief executive officer said.

“The achievements of this cohort have been truly inspiring. Supervisors and students have already reported real gains in employee confidence, communication, and progress on and off of the job site. When Electric Plus first approached us with an urgent need for industry-specific English literacy that also supported their team to thrive outside of their work, we recognized a partner that values its team and deeply believes in employee development. When we uplift our teams to grow and contribute their best, we know performance and retention rises, alongside results, cooperation, and that intangible sense of fulfillment we all seek. We are proud to partner with progressive and innovative employers like Electric Plus to at once reveal the full potential of existing talent held back only by language and literacy barriers and develop a workforce that pushes the envelope on excellence and equity in central Indiana.”

“Indy Reads has been an incredible partner, not just in delivering English literacy training, but also tailoring the class to our electrical industry and our employees’ needs,” Matt Hamilton, superintendent at Electric Plus said.

“What makes the partnership truly unique is Indy Reads’ adaptability. The learning fits into our workday without disrupting productivity. They took the time to understand what our employees needed and collaborated with our team to make the training relevant, practical, and impactful.”

About Indy Reads

Indy Reads builds literacy, English language, and job readiness skills to empower adults and their families to reach their full potential. For more than 40 years, the nonprofit organization has worked toward a vision of 100% literacy for all. High literacy levels grant access to greater developmental, educational, civic, and career opportunities. Current statistics show that 1 in 6 adults in Indiana read at or below a fifth-grade level. Through its Community Classrooms and Programming, Indy Reads advances social equity through education, helping adult learners increase their English language and literacy proficiency, prepare for their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma, and build workforce skills to improve their employability and advancement potential. Indy Reads is proudly one of few organizations that serves adults of all literacy skill levels, including the most beginning-level and beyond.
