An Open Letter to Our Indy Reads Community

Empowering adults and families through English literacy is at the very core of what makes us Indy Reads. As a member of our community, you’ve been a huge part of that mission. Whether you’ve volunteered with us, followed our student stories on social media, donated, spent time in the Indy Reads bookstore, or attended our programs and events, you have made a difference by being an active part of our community.

This week, I have the privilege of joining this community along with you. Having worked in a leadership position with Virginia’s oldest and largest adult literacy organization, located in the greater DC area, for ten years, I am excited to learn and grow with Indy Reads as its new Chief Executive Officer.

I want to thank Indy Reads’ former CEO Ryan King for his stewardship of Indy Reads’ mission these last five years. Over his tenure, Ryan has led the organization to its strongest financial and programmatic foundation in its 37-year history. He spearheaded a program serving adults struggling with literacy that expanded from a one-on-one tutoring model to a Community Classrooms-based model that increases access for all through both virtual and in-person initiatives. Ryan also saw the bookstore and program operations space unite as we moved Indy Reads to our new home in Fountain Square.

2022 is going to bring even more opportunities to Indy Reads. We are excited to start new 2Gen programming for Hoosier families to read, learn, and grow together.

I am committed to guiding Indy Reads with grace and solidarity as we move into our next phase of service in Central Indiana. My career has been shaped by a commitment to social justice, inspiring enthusiasm for new opportunities, and maintaining decades-long relationships and I am honored to join you in advancing our shared vision of 100% literacy for all.

Thank you for all you do and give to support Indy Reads’ growth to meet the needs of our community. We wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Ruba Marshood
Chief Executive Officer

P.S. Your support this holiday season enables us to continue our service this program year to over 150 adult students. Every gift or pledge made by December 31, 2021 up to $15,000 will be matched by a generous donation from Eli Lilly and Company. Learn more at indyreads.org/TogetherIndyReads.
