Workshop: Hands-on Community Art
November 18, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm
FreeJoin Arthrive at Indy Reads on November 18th, 12pm-6pm, for a hands-on community art workshop! This all-ages event will cover printmaking!
Try out Arthrive’s new community art kit which breaks down into a portable tabletop printmaking studio! The print is collaborative and takes two people to make a print. The unique rainbow-rolled prints are distributed at the studio event and into the community in public spaces. These prints belong to a public art archive and people are encouraged to return the prints back to the public space.
Erin Harper Vernon is the founder of Arthrive, an artist, and an educator. Volunteerism is central to her art practice in social impact, justice, and community-centered art. After teaching in higher education for 18+ years, after 2020, she shifted her teaching practice to where she hoped to make more of a felt impact in her immediate neighborhood. As a multidisciplinary artist, she pulls from design, photography, printmaking, and film skills. She is interested in connecting people through collaboration.
Practices that incorporate post-traumatic growth through art-making inspire her art practice. As a teacher, she asks herself, “How can I push into my neighborhood or city?” Living with art is a human essential that impacts the social health of a community or quality of life. As an artist, she is interested in how making art can help people have empathy and cultural connection.
In approaching art as a social practice, she asks herself what strengths or skills she can volunteer to the community—at the same time, helping to bridge a felt need to connect to others through the process of art-making and shared community.
